1965 Disc brake conversion.

I have read her before and cant seem to find it.

What years of trucks can I get and do the disc brake swap as a simple bolt on project?

Thinking of getting the old slick out and updating her a bit. Disc brakes, maybe power steering, possible lower it and convert to v8 power plant. I don't think I really want to go to the extreme of a CV front swap.

Any tips and tricks appreciated.

Twin I-beam All the way up to 79. Everyting changed in 80.

F100-F150 are the easiest and true "bolt in" swaps.

Power or manual steering makes a difference, you will need the booster and m/c and the firewall brackets, proportioning valve, frame brackets for the brake hoses a bunch of other odds and ends. The brake light switch is different as well.

Its best to buy a donor truck or make a detailed list and find an unmolested truck in a JY and get everything all at once.

I got lucky and found a 76 F150 with an FE, 3 speed manual power steering column, and power disc brakes. Cant be to many of those around.

Thanks Shadowrider!

Can you just change the brakes and not the I-beams or do you need to change the beams as well? Then again if I get the drop beams it wont matter...

Read these tech articles. They are for 67+ F-series but address many of the same issue our 65-66 twin I-beam trucks have.

Some say spindles must stay with the kinpins, others say it doesn't matter, mix and match all you want.

Most say good luck separating the spindle from the kingpin on the truck.

Big D, If to are wanting to stay with the FE V8 engine 73-76 is the year choice for donor, for 302 73-79 will work. I bought a 76 donor 360 C6, parked it beside my 66 dropped the I-beams in both, and slid the complete set from the 76 over and bolted it up on my 66. I swapped the steering gear and column, had the C6 rebuilt at a local shop, had the engine rebuilt, spun my odometer to zero, got it running and put it on the road.

Do not buy parts buy a donor parts truck to 79 that has the engine tranny that you want to go with. You will have all the parts needed for the swap. I had a place to keep it so I sold parts off my donor for more than I paid for it.

Buy a donor, save headaches.

1965 F100/250's use ONE YEAR ONLY king pins. The king pins locking bolt is in a different location on the spindle than it is on 1966/79's.

Sounds like a good plan.

My son got me to thinking about this again. He works for Comp Cams in Memphis and can get all kinds of parts etc for reasonable. Im thinking this would be a good project for the two of us and it would be nice to get the old Slick back on the road. He was thinking of getting a LS motor with Comp Cams "Fast" system for EFI. Then do the CV frontend etc etc. Im thinking it would be much easier and doable for the swap we are talking about. Not to mention future repairs would be much easier!

If memory serves me right...

When I replaced the king pins and bushings in this truck about 30 years ago. This is an EARLY 65 model and there was a Late 65 and up pin as well.

Exactly what you were saying.

Thanks for all the help. Im sure I will be back and will try to do a photo thread of the project.

1965 F100/250 2WD: C5TZ-3111-C .. King Pin Kit.

Notice that 1966 and later use different part numbers.

Another question...

Will the van front ends interchange as well or only a pickup? (E150)

On a side note. Was browsing Craigslist and found this ad...1978 Ford F150 inline v-6

Says its a "inline v6".

No, Will Not.

65-79 bolt hole exchange F series only. If you are going CV it won't matter anyway.

If decide to go with the 73-79 swap:

Unfortunately installed front disc. upgrade before I happened upon FTE forum or likely the swap would have been less problematic. Did come away realizing there are a few variations to the upgrade.

l Believe there's a 'how to' in the 'article' drop down menu at top of page. Also posting a link, if recall it's to ddavidv's website, suggest browse the site, found lots of helpful info.
