I have a ford small block my grandfather had squirrelled away and I have no idea what size it is, and I would really like to know so I could use it for a project. It is a v-8, and the only numbers I could find on the block are:
8U104344
I would really like to use this block as a starter for a project since it was one of the last ones my grandfather was working on before he died.
Thanks
Look on the block behind where the starter would mount and you should find a casting numer such as C8xx etc. Then check the stickie at top of this forum to decipher.
A picture would certainly help narrow it down, there are some distinct differences between the 351w and smaller displacement Windsor family motors that a trained eye can spot.
Sorry, living proof on eshould check the stickies first....
ID is C6ME-A
so, according to stickie:
'66 Mercury 289/302
But, how do I know if it is a 289 or a 302, short of micing the bores or did I just answer my own question?
Also, my Uncles were talking about a Boss 302, could this be it?
Wasnt there something about the freeze plugs on those to tell it?
Thank you
A '66 casting number would be a 289, and will have the 6 bolt bellhousing.
A Boss 302 would be 1969 and have 4 bolt mains, so that's out.
A standard 302 block would be '67 or '68, as it was intro'd in '68, so that's out. AFAIK, the only diff is slightly longer cylinders in the lower part of the bloc, as deck height is the same.
So you probably have a nice 289 there, which you may be able to make a 302 out of.
Cool, that is what i needed to know. A 289 is not seen as much as a 302, and I am going for different.
The plan is to get an '04 mustang gt theft recovery with no drivetrain and swap this puppy in with a c6 from the yard here. Should be different enough for me yet still be fun.
Just for giggles, if I throw about 2K at this motor, what would be reasonable horsepower figures?? I know it would depend on components, but just looking for approximation.
Thanks
2 grand wont get far making big power. i would say 300 is tops unless your 289 is in great shape and you spend money only on heads w/ extras, cam, and intake w/ carb, dist, but you will still need exhaust and one thing leads to another. i pulled my 302 and planed to put a cam in it and throw it back in and now its been 2 years and about 4 grand and counting. for a low budget i would get an intake, distributer, headers and have fun unless its already worn out
one more thing to check is pull the valve cover and where it has 289 cast in the head see if it has 1 or 2 dots above it. one is normal but two is hi po. something worth checking
