blow by?

I have only driven my new project, a '76 F100 360 cid on the dirt roads, mostly keeping it 1000-1500 rpms if that, just trying to feel it out. Oil pressure is decent, she doesnt run hot but the other day, after about 30 mins of this kind of driving, it started to sputter a bit, sounded like it wasnt hitting on all 8. Then it wouldnt idle. I revved it up to 3000 or better rpms and she blew some smoke out and cleared up and sounded good and idled again. I havent pulled the plugs yet but got me to wondering if this is indicative of worn out rings?

Sounds more like an air fuel ratio problem and not a ring problem. If it was a ring problem you would blow smoke through the exhaust all of the time and it would not clear up.

You air fuel ratio is off, and it appears to be rich on the low air speed circuit. More air and more rpm might be better, but it appears that slow air is too rich.

Thanks, I planned to borrow a gauge and do a compression test but I think you are right. It also will *hiccup* when you accelerate, I was thinking the accelerator pump, probably carb needs overhaul.
