Well i wanna be able to move in my truck when i put it to the floor, so how do i get this kickdown bar hooked up? its not the original carb for the 78 351m i know, but how should i hook it up?
I am sure am glad u posted this because I have been meaning to order this stuff for three weeks and kept forgetting! Dont forget to buy the kit and the extention. Just ordered both and the grand total was $22.61 with shipping.
im sure u could find a kickdown at the junk yard without to much effort. If all you need is the rod, I'm not sure but I doubt there is much difference in the rod itself. Any one should b usable.
around here anything that old that lands in a junk yard is pretty well crushed before it gets there, been probably close to ten years since I've seen or even heard of one landing in a junk yard in these parts. The high price of scrap in years past took care of most of the ones sitting around.
I have searched high and low for that rod.I just wonder if anyone makes a kit to do away with it and put a cable style set-up on one.
do you think (for now) I could just zip tie it to the throttle linkage until i order the adapter? if so, how far or back should i attach it? I assume that i should pull it as far forward as possible and zip tie it to the linkage with the throttle closed so when i mash it to the floor it will pull the bar back?

That isn't how the kickdown works on C4/C6 transmissions.
With the throttle at WOT and with the kickdown rod pushed into full "kickdown" there should be about .060 gap between the throttle tang and adjustment screw.
It isn't that precise, you can eyeball it, but the gap is to make sure the kickdown doesn't prevent the carb from achieving full throttle.
As a side note, I haven't used a kickdown in 17 years and 120,000+ miles.
sorry but what is the throttle "tang" is that what the linkage and the throttle rod is hooked up too? and why does it prevent it to going to WOT and how come you havent used a kickdown bar?
Since you have a "universal" carb you need to the adaptor kit to connect the kickdown rod to the carb. The kit will have a "tang" the adjusts the freeplay.
If there is no freeplay the kickdown will bottom out and you will not be able to open the carb to full throttle.
I do not use the kick down because I have enough power to not need it. Besides if I really do need to "kickdown" I just shift to "2".
I'm in the same boat...I have been looking for a kickdown rod for my 78 F100 as well...I have 351W and C6 transmission. The old tranny didn't have a kick down, but new one does, the Holley Carb already has the adapter, it was there at one time, just not now...I did a search on Ebay, and well lets just say if I could find one in a junk yard I would be better off, but same deal around here, not many in the yards these days.
I used the stock kickdown return spring just hooked to the acc. pump. and then i used a small nut and bolt with some washers to make the adjuster. cost me 0$ and works just fine. no binding, trans kicks down just fine. and was free
