So I am replacing the power steering pump and pressure hose on my 85 F250 Diesel. I have the pump and hose off but now how do I get the pulley off? Will a place like Advance or Autozone swap it out when I buy the new one. I can borrow a pulley puller but dont no how to use it. Do you just screw it until the pulley pops off or what? Also once off, how do you get it back on the other pump? Any info would be great!
There's a special power steering pulley puller. Do NOT try to use a 3 jaw gear puller or anything on it as you'll just mess up the pulley. Advance should have one for rent that you can use.
It grabs the undercut on the center hub right around the shaft. To install the new pulley you press it on by threading a bolt into the front pump shaft, and tightening it down with a nut/washer.
Usually when you get the new pump, the store will remove your old pulley for you. Thats the way it is where I work anyhow. The new pump should come with a special nut/bolt combo to install your old pulley on the new pump. I have a small collection of them from all the pumps my mustang was eating for awhile.
dont use a standard puller. there is one specifically for the ford. it is a small steel collar that cups around the center section of the pulley, then a ring wraps around that. then the buller runs though it. theres kits on ebay, also have them at harbor freight. you can use the same kit to press the pulley on the new pump. DO NOT USE A REGULAR PULLEY PULLER.... you will mess that pulley up.
