overheating, noisy engine sounds
i can smell the engine metal heat.
this happens at idle and driving. takes about 15min till check engine light.
was driving fine a few days ago except for a noise soinds like a flyweel out of balance and knocking against something, in rythym i dont think it is engine knock, but could be.
also Van studders at excelleration up hills, or on long inclines on highway - feels like when driving a clutch and gear is to high.
trans fluid looks great and at right level.
its an 1988 EFI 8 cyl. Econoline xlt.
any help would be much appreciated. tomorrow i break out my tool box and try to figure it out.
its a new "very used van". previous owner beat it up a bit, i fix it when i can,,,
what else could it be?
whats the way i can check for rod knock?
its got a lot of problems, but not sure if the overheating is related,
the studdering could come from the noisy and about to fail fuel pump-?which i dont think is supplying correct fuel pressure?
if everything was fine on the van and it started to overheat what would be the system of tests.
as you can tell i am being optimistic. at least i can end up learning a lot more about the engine trying to figure it out.
the van only cost me 100$ about 6 months ago.
i filled up the radiator and can see coolant pouring out of the weep hole on the water pump.
also i think the over heating did make some rod knock cause the sound is worse now, and sounds a lot like rod knock on youtube.
will replace the water pump and see if that fixes the overheating.
