I can't wait to see the response for this cuz I am about 2 months from replacing my mine (stock size 255/70-16)
From what I hear, 33's fit easy (equates to a 265/75-16 I believe)
I have seen a lot of the 4 WD F-150 pick ups running 285/75-16's (35's ?)
BFG All-Terrains are good lookers and perform reasonably well for most conditions both on-road and off.
If it's just syle points your after, these are a great choice. If it's true hard core rock crawlin or mud slingin you will need a specialized tire that won't perform to well on the road when it comes to things like noise, wear, wet and even dry traction.
Of course you can consult a tire store but if they are at all like the ones here in Richmond, VA they will be very little help in your selection. Most will simply offer a price on a few brands that they have in-stock and look at you with disgust when you ask questions. It's as if they are doing you a great big favor, taking $600-$900 off your hands.
That said I do run alot of highway miles on my company work truck (approximatily 50,000 miles a year) and have had a chance to sample quite a few brands. Of course very few of these miles included any off-roading as the furthest I go is a few hundred feet off-road when I visit our construction sites (which are often muddy and well rutted)
My current set of donuts and my favorite to date is the BFG Long Trail Radials. I'm running 265/75-16's and getting good wear, good ride and very little noise. They do lack a little when compared to the Michelin LTX AT's I replaced with them but then they were also about $35 per tire cheaper too.
A 285/75R16 is about 33" tall. They look great and fit with no problems at all. I recommend the BFG All-Terrain K/O for an agressive "look", good traction, decent road manners & excellent wear.
My buddy just got a set of 285/17/R16 Geolander A/T II. They look great and a sort of really mean highway look and mildley aggressive off road look... Not to mention they handle great on the road.
Sorry

My Bad on the metric to English converstion, sorry
I was just guessing. My 265/75-16's are 31.7" O.D. as are most tires this size. That should make most of the 285/75-16's about 75% of 2 centimeters taller or approximately 32.3" O.D.
I've got 285/75/16 Bridgestone Duelers on my Expy. I've put around 12,000 miles on them and they look and ride exceptionally well considering the aggressive tread pattern.
Hey Buzzard, which Bridgestone Duelers are you running? I have run them in the past on my work truck and they were great. I got good all around grip (dry, wet, & snow) good wear and a great ride for a great price. All this and at the time Bridgestone threw in a hand held GPS reciever as a special offer! I think I paid about $98 each plus $7 each mount & balance for 265/75-16's and got 45k out of them. As they say, your milage may vary. I tend to stop, start and run the corners a little fast and that eats away at your tread. Ok, I go way fast and am very hard on tires, though I do keep a close eye on inflation and rotation.
(They could have gone about 5k more but I don't like to run the rainy season without a good amount of tread depth)
Petrol, I've got the Dueler A/T D693's which is the standard A/T. Because of the aggressive tread design, I was somewhat skeptical when I bought them, but they have a 30-day customer satisfaction guarantee. So I thought I couldn't go wrong. Overall, they are wonderful tires and unbelievably quiet at highway speeds. The only time there is any "hum" at all is around 30 mph and even then it's slight.
