Picked up a very nice 1990 F-250 with a Banks 7.3! It runs very well after warm-up, but there's a little tick in the first few minutes of operation. I'm betting the car lot did a oil change and put in the wrong oil. I see tons of different kinds of oil for my truck so what do you use?
I've seen 15-40.... 5-40.... Oil specifically for turbo diesel.... What do you guys think.
Even if it's a sticky lifter, I don't know how long it's been ticking, and it runs / tows great! Is there a certain diesel oil that will quiet the lifter?
You will probably get as many different opinions as there are members but for what it is worth, I run Mobil Delvac 15w40. I use it in the truck and a couple other diesel engines and have had no problems with it.
i stick to 15w40. a lot of guys with newer engines are using the 5w for better fuel mileage. i say stick with the 15w40. chevron makes a great oil for a great price. i use valvoline diesel when it is on sale.
If the oil is rated for hd diesel engine then it is ok to use. Brands are a personal preference. The tick could be from a sticky injector. I add extra lube in the fuel as I had a tick and it went away after several tanks. Use it regulary in all the diesels on the farm and the engines on the older farm equipment runs better. They was manufactured in the days of high sulfur fuels.
