I have a 2002 f350 powerstroke. I have had an issue with the AC.
It will blow from the defrost vent instead of the dash vents. It has done this while in 4 wheel drive, and most recently when pulling a small utility trailer 5x8. I have also pulled my 5th wheel trailer and never had it happen. Dose anyone have an idea what might be causing this?
4x4 is activated by vacumn if it is ESOF. Chances are that you have a leak in the hoses going to the front wheels or around the vacum pump on the inner fender. The default on the Heat - AC is defrost when there is a leak in the vacum system. Hoses get dry and brittle then break or leak. Check close and maybe you can find it.
The most common cause is a vacuum leak, and the most common place for the vacuum leak is the shift-on-the-fly (ESOF) 4 wheel drive system (as c125bob mentioned). Chances are you probably have ESOF and the front hubs are not locking (but if you need it, you can manually lock them).
There can be other causes, such as a vacuum leak somewhere else, or a malfunctioning vacuum solenoid.
