Thanks, I will see what I can do. Its hot enough today that the highside should be about 220-250 then. If I try to but can't get the highside to pump up that high with the clutch locked, the commpressors bad. Right?

Not necessarily. High side pressure will depend on the ambient air temp, efficiency of the system and of course charge level. I've not really seen many systems hit over 240psi really. So use those numbers as more of a generalization. On a hot day I would say you should see at least 200psi though roughly. If your clutch goes on/off repeatedly (short cycling) you're charge level is likely off. Another generalization is that it takes about 85% of R134a of what was R12. Our trucks call for 48oz of R12 so you should expect to hit somewhere around 41oz of R134a. I'm not sure how this compares to what you have put in already?

I am using a 30 lb jug, so no idea how much it took to fill.

The A/C works now! 69* air coming out the vents when its over 100 outside. Turns out that the HF gauges were reading 250 PSI, when it was really at 85. Put a full charge in and it works great!

The clutch is still on a toggle switch, but the part to fix that will be in in the morning. Then I'll be done with this!
So I can change that and not have to recover the charge? The guys at O'reailys say that I will blow the charge if I remove the old one.

Thank all you guys for your help, y'all are great!

This is off of a chevy but the fords same. Look closely at the old one and you can see where the switch screws on that there is a valve so when the switch is removed you wont lose your charge.

Have you tried your old switch since you have charged the system. If it was working properly it won't let the clutch cycle when the system is low.

No, the old one is dead.
The R12 and R134a switches are diffrent anyway, so It had to be changed either way.
I just got back from the parts store with it.

Where have you been? We have missed you!
