Second post! Broken speedo question

All the other gages seem to work but the speedo at all times is pegged out to the max end of the dial.

Ideas? Any fixing this? If not, is there a speedo assembly only replacement that could be done in the cluster. Does the entire cluster need to be replaced? Where would I get one cheap that works? Are the clusters the same on all 1999 through 2003 trucks diesel or gas?

Welcome to all suggestions...

Thor

Is your ABS light on? Might be the speed sensor on top of the rear end.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't recall seeing an abs fault but I'll look for it when I pick it up and I'll have the scanner with me on the ride home so can check out the VSS signal. If signal is good, I hope I can just replace the speedo portion of the cluster and not the whole thing.

Ok, here it is:

No ABS light.

Odometer works and is accurate, so it's not the VSS.

Speedo is pegged out all the time, key off, key on, running, whenever...

Here's with the engine running.

Here's with the key out of the ignition.

So.... Ideas? Is the speedo replaceable without replacing the entire cluster? (Would like to keep the mileage accurate)

You know what I would try. I would try seeing if you can move the needle and see if it is just stuck. Someone probably pegged the truck out and the needle stuck. Though not sure how to get the case open.

I'll be trying to get to it when I get back from work. Probably have to take most of the dash apart to get to it. Who knows I might get lucky again and all it needs is a nudge.

The instrument cluster isn't all that difficult to get out of these trucks. Before you attempt it, get the little "tuning fork" Ford radio removal tools. Pep boys has them for around five bucks. http://www.springerpop.net/F350/images/upfitter07.jpg

Once the radio is out, there are two small screws above the radio opening, then the bezel pulls out. It's held in by snap-in, snap-out clips.

See: SpringerPop's Upfitter Switches

Then, there's four bolts that hold the instrument panel in place. They're obvious. Since you have a standard transmission, the gear indicator is not a factor, so pull the panel straight back toward you. There are three electrical connectors into the printed circuit board that is the backside.

See http://springerpop.net/F350/images/theft_light.jpg for a hint of what it looks like back there.

Maybe drill a small hole in the bottom of the casing if it doesn't come open easy or if it is glued and nudge it with a bent paperclip?

Or do what he said, LOL, I just posted and he did before I finished, LOL.

Hey Marv, I think I have some of those tools lying around, otherwise I just make them out of a coathanger. Hopefully, getting it apart will lead to a quick mechanical fix. From the picture you were showing the needle movement seems to be a replaceable component if worse comes to worse.

Visseroth I'll keep the paperclip method in mind if I can't break into the case any other way without breaking it. Thanks!

Update: I took the dash cluster cover off and removed the cluster. The plexi comes off easily only held in with some sprung fingers. The needle moves freely and is now down at the bottom end.

Speedo still does not move.

Odometer is turning over withe mileage.

I took the VSS out of the rear and there was hardly anything to clean off...

So still a VSS? If it was bad, wouldn't the Odo stop counting too?

Is there another output shaft sensor on this 6 speed that could be at fault?

Don't think my Actron shows the indicated vehicle speed in it's data stream. It's kind of limited when it comes to this vehicle, but I'll check it out tomorrow.

A dash cluster from a salvage yard fixed the problem. I took the new / salvaged cluster to a speedo shop where they matched the Odo. I have such low mileage (108k) that it's something I wanted to preserve.
Works great and only cost $75 to get the mileage kosher.
