I went down today for my sticker. Another guy I know who has the identical truck followed me down. Both of us don't use the truck for work, just pulling the horses around. I went first. I still have my green numbered plate. The guy asked for the $29 fee.A quick check and I'm done. The other guy pulls in with his commercial plates. He just bought it and had no choice. Also he didn't know about the new law. I thought he did. The inspector asked for $129 and said it would take a while. I wish I had my camera to capture the look on his face. He later asked me where did I get that plate. I said i got it when I bought my 88 250 back then and I'm trying to hang on to it for as long as I can. I didn't have the heart to tell him I don't have to pay the added fees this crappy state charges ether. I figured he was got P.O. enough for one day.
If it's anything like New York, and you are using a "passenger plate", you should have a cap/topper/camper on the back of the truck. Without that, you should be registered commercial.
Just wait until you get pulled over and fined for operating "out of class"
Always, ALWAYS check your local laws before buying a truck...

No cap needed.
In MASS, you can register a truck under 10k as a pass vehicle. Over 10k and it's mandatory Commercial Reg. SRW at least. I think DRW's are subject to other issues.
Oh, and if your 'under 10k pass reg'd truck' is OBD I-ish like mine, there's not even an emissions check - strictly safety.
And it really pays off when you're going through the toll booths. BIG jump in toll cost if you're reg'd Commersh
Commercial plates in MA require a DOT inspection in addition to the normal inspection. They are charged out at an hourly rate...most places charge for at least an hour.
No cap needed.

More than 4 wheels on the ground require commercial plates. SRW...up to 10000 GVW...owners discression...10001 and above...require commercial plates.
Interesting. In NY, if a pickup truck weighs more then 5500 lbs EMPTY, you need a cap/topper/camper to register it with passenger plates. Unluckily, the title for my '01 F250 says 5600 and change. In reality, even without the cap, it weighs in around 6800 or so.
So, I bought a cap when I got my truck brand-new, and now it's got a registration class of SUBN (suburban!).
The best part about owning a diesel in NYS is that they don't do emissions testing; just safety check with no OBD plug in to DMV. I pay $10 to get my truck inspected. I pay $21 for my car which they plug in to DMV and give it the whole nine yards.
Your buddy is in for another world of hurt in december...Comm plates expire every dec 31st not like pass plate that go every 2 years. Comm plate also pay per lbs of gvw....
F150-350 /srw
If not used for any business, has NO
ladder racks, mounted tool boxes can be registered
as a pass vehicle and will get the $29 inspection.
DRW = commercial
Currently the law says if 5 or more wheels on the ground it
is commercial.
Commercial plates=pia (I have F350DRW)
240 for plates each year
higher tolls on pike
higher taxes
129 inspection - It is DOT like but not the exact same
need triangles, chock blocks, and fire ext
no med card, no first aid kit
no emmissions per se, but a particulate/smoke test

Reg. plates are just good for 1 year here. Have to do inspection once a year.
I'm not sure what the restrictions are in MO, but the DMV gave me passenger plates. They didn't even ask what I was using the truck for. I know I have the option to go up but it's not really necessary since I rarely tow and when I do it's pretty light.
