I'm restoring my great grandfather's 1960 F-100 to concourse level. My question is in regard to the exhaust. The truck has the original muffler inlet pipe and a stock-style replacement muffler. Everything after the muffler is gone. Does anyone have any information, and/or photos, of the factory exhaust system routing for a 1960 F-100 with 2wd and 110" wb? From what I gather (correct me if I'm wrong), the inlet pipe (B7C-5246-A) feeds into the muffler (B7C-5230-A) under the cab (originally a one-piece unit with the muffler, replacements are two-piece pipe/muffler parts), followed by a short outlet pipe (B5C-5255-A) which exits on the passenger side, just before the right-rear wheel, under the bed. Can anyone confirm this routing is correct? If correct, does the exit pipe point straight out (horizontal to ground), or point slightly downward towards the ground?
Although I don't have a 1960, all of the vintage (stock) Ford trucks that I've seen have the same set up as you described and the pipe points straight out.
From what I have on my 59 and 60 pickups, the exhaust exited behind the the right rear tire. The Ford parts book illustration does not show it very well. My 59 (F250) has the exit angled toward the right rear corner. Mine both have a bracket for the pipe aft of the rear axle.
You might want to check with a parts store that has an older Walker catalog. Those sometimes had good routing illustrations.
The only 57 and up Ford trucks that I am aware of that had just a short pipe with a turndown after the muffler were the 500 and up models. They extended just behing the back of the cab
well the exhaust on my 59 ran from the manifold and was cut off flush with the bottom of the frame. lol wish i could have heard it run. your truck sound like a nice project i love seeing the old restored ones even more than the moderized ones.
I'll have to do some more homework. The reason this puzzles me so much, is the lack of any frame-mounted exhaust clamps past the muffler (and no marks on the frame that one was ever there). My truck has been in the family since new, with nothing altered. Heck, even the radiator hoses and clutch parts were the original 1960 Ford items when I took possession of the truck, but unfortunately everything after the muffler was gone (rusted out and removed). My 1960 Ford truck service manual, which shows the exhaust system for a panel truck (but no pickup) depicts a full-length system. Even my 1960 Ford Truck Parts and Accessories Catalog depicts two different part numbers between the panel truck and pickup outlet pipes. To top it off, all the restoration catalogs list the outlet pipe for my truck as "short pipe". I have an NOS outlet pipe in-hand, which is the short pipe. Anyone have some original sales ads and/or photos depicting the exhaust?
According to my parts book a pickup takes a 24" pipe after the muffler. My book gives the part number as B5C-5255-A. It looks like a straight pipe 2" in diameter. The only other listing is for the panel trucks at 96" long, and for the big trucks and busses at various lengths.
That's what my books state as well, but I have don't have any pictures or diagrams to verify. The B5C-5255-A measures 23-5/8" long with one bend to point to pipe towards a passenger-side exit (have a perfect NOS one in-hand).

Do you have a photo of your 59 and 60 tailpipes, particularly the rear clamp (if original) and the over-axle pipe?
Ok, I just went through all my 57-60 dealer literature and photos and I did not see one tail pipe. There was even trucks with no rear bumper and not a pipe in sight. I have owned/parted out 8 of these trucks and the only clamp I have see is the one mid frame. I would highly suspect your correct with a exit before the rear axle. I will scan some photos in a little bit to prove my point. The only thing left to check would be my filmstrips. I hope this helps, -4speed
That's exactly what I was finding in everything I researched, but couldn't find any part numbers, diagrams, verbiage, etc. of an over-the-axle pipe. Mine still has the original mid clamp (NOS replacement on the way), but nothing further behind. Considering the originality of the truck and the different tailpipe part number between the pickups and panel trucks of the same size, I'm almost 100% the pipe should exit before the axle. BTW, did you receive my e-mail with the E-bay link to the NOS tail pipes? The seller has a over 10 in stock. The one I received looked like it was made yesterday, complete with the engineering number stamped on the side.
I'll hijack my own post for a second. Does your truck have the factory chrome front bumper? If so, are the attaching brackets (riveted to the bumper) chrome plated or painted black? My original was painted white, but I'm going to convert to chrome in the interest of durability and looks. I'll keep my eye out for the exhaust photos you have.
