I have a 97 F250, 351, auto, that needs a new exhaust system. I'm going to gut the catalytic converter, replace the pipes and muffler. The mufflers that the local shops have been putting on are crap, they sound like crap and they don't last long. I would like to find a better muffler. I want it to be quiet without hurting performance, 3" inlet and 3" outlet, and fits in original stock position under the bed. What would you recommend and where can I get it? Thanks!
WickedFlow Max series. Excellent quality, great price. I've been using them on my own for years, quieter and cleaner sounding than a Magnaflow, better flowing too.
My son and I did this to his 96 F250. At the flange where both head pipes come together, we welded a Flomaster Y pipe to the flange to get a single 3" pipe(also makes it removable by unbolting the flange) He then bought a Magnaflow 3" in/out round muffler, not very long, then turned the exhaust out infront of the rear tire. I like it but it may be a tad loud. Longer muffler would change that. I wouldn't gut the cat because it becomes a huge chamber and can hurt flow. If you need it for a visual then re pipe it with 3".

DYNO TEST
All mufflers were dyno-tested on a 355-cube SBC with 10.0:1 compression, Air Flow Research 190 aluminum heads, a CompCams 292 hyd. a Victor Jr. intake, a Holley 750-cfm double-pumper, and 1 5/8 Headman headers.
Allied resonators (that sell for about $40 each and available at any muffler shop nationwide) are excellent and come in just about any diameter and length (10" to 38" IIRR). Another excellent factory OEM replacement unit is Walker.
