Exclamation Code's

Well for the first time since i've owned this beast it died on me and the check engine light came on and the overdrive light was flashing, it started back up, OD light went off but the CEL stayed on so i took it to AAMCO cause they do a free diagnostic test, and this is what they put in the write up.

Computer scan revealed the following codes p0720-output speed sensor circut, p0722 - output speed sensor no signal.

now does this make sense? where is this output speed sensor located? and would that cause the X to shut down?
thx for your 411 ahead of time

It is a tiny thing that is on the side of the transmission tailshaft?

As usual, check for bad wiring first, if it is good, chuck the sensor.

I had the same code on a Jeep years ago. When I pulled the sensor I learned that it is magnetic and had fine metal shavings stuck to it that were preventing it from accurately reading the tailshaft RPM.

This sensor sends a signal to your PCM for the speedo and a bad signal will affect other readings, especially with the transmission shift points and cruise control. Not sure why it would cause the engine no to start.

Good Luck,
Stew

My 04' was doing the same thing and got the same code. And a P0301 which is cyl 1 misfire. I ended up changing the OSS and that didn't fix my problem. I ended up changing the #1 plug and COP and it fixed it. Hope this helps. BTW, AAMCO wanted to charge me $1500 for a trans rebuild I didn't need.

Well it depends on your tranny. Mine is the 4R100, and it's located on the top of the "extension ring" between the tail of the tranny and the front of the Xfer case. You can't see it and you have to do it all by feel. It takes a 8mm wrench and you have to remove the bolt and slowly work the sensor up and out from it's hole, then let it hang down the side of the trans and carefully remove the clips holding it in, then reverse the steps. Not as bad as it sounds.

From what I've seen on mine, it makes sense if it shut the vehicle down once, while running, when it failed. After that the truck should just decide to operate as if the sensor wasn't there. I learned this by forgeting to plug it back in after rebuilding the engine(I'd pulled the whole drivetrain out), ran fine, shifted a little rough, CEL. He's right about doing it by sight, easy but annoying, still worth doing it yourself to save the money.

Location of Turbine Shaft Speed sensor and Output Shaft Speed sensor.

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) that sends speed signal for speedo and ABS control is mounted on top of the rear pumpkin.

Did you clear the code afterwards? Mine ended up being that and #1 plug and COP.
