Hey all, Just wanted to throw this out there - I have a 95 I-6 motor, the EGR valve had gummed up the intake pretty badly over the years. I took a piece of sheet metal, cut it to *rough* size, and placed it between the EGR valve and the intake. I have to say, on longer hauls, this drops the intake temp by 10-20 degrees and it seems to be getting about 3-4mpg better on drives over 75 miles. Just wanna throw that out to some who haul a lot and like to keep the engine compartment temp down.
Actually that's quite interesting, as what I noticed with my old 302 was just the opposite - higher operating temperatures and more fuel burnt. The primary reason for the EGR is to allow the PCM to advance the timing more and back off on the fuel, with no EGR it will hold back on the timing and fatten up the fuel mixture to make sure you don't risk detonation or running too lean, and that's exactly what mine was doing. I'm usually not a fan of emissions controls, as a matter of fact I firmly believe that EPA is the worst thing that ever happened to the US automotive industry, but the EGR is the one emissions system that I do like... unless it's in a diesel of course, then it sucks, lol.
Out of curiosity, did you leave the EGR valve harness unplugged? Does that not give you a check engine light?
The computer should actually know the EGR ain't working properly by the readings of the O2 sensors, but hey, if she runs better now that's all that matters!

If it was me I'd be really wondering why there was junk like that in the exhaust.
