Keep blowing out EGR spacer plate gasket!
On my 79 460 with the stock intake manifold on it, I keep having trouble with the EGR spacer plate gasket ( the one that lies between the intake manifold and the EGR spacer plate ) blowing out where the gasket is thin and makes a loop outward. I have the square flange Holley style intake manifold. I have checked it for squareness, it seems to be straight, same with the intake. Has any one else had this problem and how did you deal with it? Also the EGR is not plugged off and has a new EGR valve on it which works fine.
Starting to get old.

Keep blowing out EGR spacer plate gasket!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Sep-02 AT 01:51 AM (EST)]It has brand new dual exhaust from the engine to the bumper, with 2 1/2" pipe with turbo mufflers. It was blown out also when the motor was still in the donor 79 E-250 van with single exhaust. I replaced it then because the van was driven for a while just to feel out the motor. Which we wound up totally re-building it. I have replaced it 3 times since its been in the truck with the new exhaust. It is not blowing out at the EGR valve to spacer plate, its at the intake manifold where there is a cavity I guess you would call it, where the exhaust comes from the intake and up to the EGR plate. It is an area where the clamping force is poor as the area juts way out from the actual base under the carb. Great care has been taken to try and tighten it down good.

I had the same problem, obviously that area gets extremely hot and burns the gaskets up right away. I was using Felpro replacement gaskets and they would burn up in 300 miles. I broke down and bought the Motorcraft gasket, about 9 bucks compared to 3 bucks, however it is much thicker, made of a different material and this cured the problem. It will last for at least a couple of years compared to a couple of days. It will still eventually burn out, but it takes a heck of a lot longer.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Sep-02 AT 02:12 AM (EST)]Joe, Thanks, you were writing me while I was editing my message. I too have been using the Fel-Pro gaskets. I will give my local dealer a call and see if they can hook me up with a Motorcraft gasket. Yes there just does not seem to be much to these Fel-Pro gaskets. And they are just cheesy paper gaskets to try and deal with that heat. It seems they should be a composite gasket like whats used between the EGR valve and the spacer plate itself.
By the way what year is your truck or engine?

I had exactly the same problem with blowouts but never had any luck with gaskets other than Felpro. Are you sure your using the right one? The one to use is part # 60001 / Felpro. It has a metal plate-mesh sandwiched and bonded between 2 peices of gasket material. Put it in over 3 years ago, problem solved.

Yeah, try the Fomoco gasket. It probably wouldn't hurt to put a thin layer of high temp gasket sealer in either side of the gasket in the problem area. Not too much, just a thin coating.
You shouldn't have any backpressure problems with that exhaust system.

Keep blowing out EGR spacer plate gasket!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Sep-02 AT 02:22 AM (EST)] I got the gasket at my local Ford dealer today, surprisingly they had it in stock. My what a difference there is between the the quality of the Motorcraft gasket and the Fel-Pro. The Motorcraft is a hundred times better gasket than the F-P. Thanks Joe for that tip.
Already had it on before I read your post lxman1 about using a little high temp sealant on it. Well I guess we'll see what happens now. The Fel-Pro's would not hardly last a couple - three weeks.

Hey SuperDave, hope that works out for you, obviously I wasn't the first one to have that problem and won't be the last. I have a 1986 F-250 w/460 auto trans c-6. There is a lot of good info on this site. I spent the first two weeks getting info to fix some problems, get some suggestions. Now I am trying to do my part and give some back. The owners of this site should be proud. Good luck,
Joe
