Can someone help me out here? Trying to figure out where the OEM trailer plug was mounted on these trucks. The PO of mine had it screwed to the side of the hitch because he never used it. A photo showing where and how it is attached to the bottom of the bumper would be great.
I don't think there was anything from the factory other than the harness to attach a plug to. I'm sure there wasn't one the 86. I'll take a pic of mine as it is today and post up.

If you had a factory tow package then it had a bumper mounted 7 way RV plug. I have the plug, just need to know where its supposed to be mounted (and I have to re-bend the bracket).
Pete's diagram is how mine is. The wire plug is up on the frame at the back crossmember with the actual trailer connetion on the bottom of the bumper attached to a bracket.

Thats what I need to know- how is the bracket bent and how does it attach to the bumper. I guess I wasn't clear in my original post.

It's bent with a right angle at the top that sit's flush with the bottom of the bumper. There's a little positioning tap that keeps it in place then a 13mm bolt that screws into the bottom of the bumper.

What you have to do to mount it will depend on the bumper you have. Just make it work. I have the bracket on mine bolted to the "step area" of my step bumper.
These trucks were shipped without bumpers and as many said the trucks with the tow package had the trailer plug bolted to the driver's side frame for shipping. The bumpers were a dealer installed item. If you bought a Ford bumper the bracket bolted right to it. If you bought an aftermarket bumper you had to be creative. Mine is to the left of the receiver tube, but still behind the cross-bar of the hitch to protect it from being hit with road hazards or brush when in pastures.
These are crappy pictures but i hope they help you...
That's what I needed to know, thanks man!
I have the bracket bent properly (PO had modified it some) but I couldn't see any threads in the 2 round holes on the bottom of the bumper, which won't work anyway since it puts the plug too close to the hitch (I believe I even have the same hitch as you James). Now I just need to decide if I want to stick with the OEM trailer plug, or do some modifying and run the OEM plug off of a Super Duty.

Glad I could help.
