Agreed on not dropping $$$ for a tool used once every 6-8 years.

I had need once, and found the right sized piece of square stock, about 3" long, at my local Home Depot store. Cost was about $3.

"Necessity is the mother of invention", they always say. Good job, Robin. I have a set of the Snap 0n square drive sockets, but there have been times when they were at work and I had to improvise. I'll have to keep this idea in my memory bank for next time. Thanks!

Here's what I used.

It started life as a 1/2" bolt (I think).

It helps to have a bench grinder.

That's what I was thinking about doing to a cheap 3/8" drive extension using my angle grinder, but then I checked the size of the nail setting punch. I can see where that would have been much easier to use in breaking the plug loose.

It was really handy to break loose the oil sump inspection plug, too.

I made one of those too when I pulled my inspection plug. I think I still have it laying around somewhere. lol Probably, won't be able to find it when I need it again.
