I have a 01 f250 v10 47,000 miles. When I am accelerating slowly up a hill I hear a clatter or rattle noise. Sometimes it happens every time I accelerate. A friend of mind thought it might be the lifters. It is not a ping or a knock, I am not sure what it is. Anybody else hear this noise.
Just got back from my dealer, my wife had been hearing a ticking noise for about 3-4 days and we were going to take the 1999 F350 SD Lariat Crew Cab Dually V10 in on Monday to get it checked out. Never got the chance. It seems that the V10 is starting to have some of the engines that will just pop one of the spark plugs out taking all the threads in the head with it. Mine is the third my dealer has seen and they are in a small town. $1000 just for the heads (you have to get new heads, the plug takes ALL the threads with it). My dealer is going to speak with Ford to see what they are going to do about it. Of course, as I have had Ford trucks since 1978 and never had a major problem, I did not go with an extended warranty and the truck has 72,000 on it. Not real happy about this, but I am willing to give Ford a chance to make it right.
So, I would be going in to my dealer real soon, if I were you, and having him pull all the plugs and checking the threads.
that noise is pre-detonation, try higher octane fuel the noise will go away, i think the V10 was meant to run on 89 octane or higher, my 4.0 liter ranger did it too..
well all that said and done, my 4.0 ranger used to do it, my V10 does it, my wifes 97 suburban does it, And it all goes away with higher octane fuel, id give it a try first before you start telling the dealer you have piston slap...........
Jetjock16
I know it is the same problem cause it sounds exacty like you would imagine valves and lifters chattering, but goes away with better fuel........ its pre-detonation

It could very well be what's known as flutter. It is a harmonic condition in the exhaust that many ,especially early,V10s exhibit. It is not harmful, just annoying to some.It happens right around the rpms you've stated.

Oh man!!! That is why I asked for an RPM range!!! You guys are slow...
i took it to the dealer a couple of weeks ago to get the iac valve replaced. They said the didn't hear the noise and it didn't post any codes. The noise doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it is real soft some times it is real loud.
jalawso: today i had to make two trips to a location 50 miles away pullin my trailer, and i had this topic on my mind, first trip i had 3/4 tank in truck of 87 octane gas, and going up all the hills in overdrive you push the gas real slow as to not make it shift down and their is the noise....... when i got back from that first trip 50 miles there , 50 miles back i was at 1/8 of a tank, i filled it up with 91 ocatane, and did the exact same trip with same loaded trailer, up the same hills, this time no noise.......
take my word for it.
1. its not hurtin anything, so if you dont want to spend the money for the 91 than dont
2. It will go away with the 91
Jetjock ,do you have a modified intake and exhaust ? as noted in your sig. are you running a chip
Do you think this might contribute to your pre detonation or possibly a lean condition in your engine as compared to a stock setup ?
if not then you have something wrong with spark timing or the pcm or a # of sensors which help control your engine . I could list them all if you would like
jalawso,
if jetjocks suggestion works ,I suggest that you take it back to the dealer and have them put it on the engine lab scope plus the code scanner and tell you why it doesn't do it with higher octane fuel
good point about the mods, i do have moded intake and 4" turbo diesel exhaust sytem, but............ like my earlier post said, my old 4.0 Ranger did it from brand new till i got ride of it with 150k miles, and my wifes 97 suburban has done it since we got it at 100k and still does it with cheap gas today with 200k on it.
