Vibration at 2000 rpm's
I recently bought a 2000 SD XLT, V10, Auto, 4x4 with 34k on the odometer from a local Ford dealer with a good reputation. I bit the bullet and went with an extended warranty the dealer offered.
I have had it back once for a loose heat shield underneath that they fixed. What I am noticing (and don't know if it's always been there) is a vibration and a droning sound at around 2000 rpm under acceleration. The vibration isn't a strong one, but goes away above and below 2000 rpm. It does this in or out of 4wd. The droning is loud enough to notice, but isn't terrible.
I know this is a truck and expect some truck-like behaviors like a little noise, vibration and bumpiness. I just don't know how much of this to expect.
I did look for another v10 auto on the lot and around town to test drive - no luck.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

On my truck flutter occurs right at 1800 rpms. If you have metallic chattering sound then "welcome" to the flutter club. It is very common with the V-10's. Several things may cause it, ways to fix it easiest (cheapest) to most difficult (expensive). 1.) Since you have a 4x4, like me, you have heat shields on your "Y" pipe, they have been known to come loose and vibrate. You can re-weld them, or put hose clamps around them to keep them tight. The best option, take them off and place them in the trash can. 2.) The metal close out plate that fits between the engine and tranission is not secured at the bottom. If you crawl under your truck you can actually take a small screwdriver and pull this plate back. You can take a pair of pliers and gently bend the plate away from the transmission housing about one quarter of an inch. I went further and put a bead of silicon between the plate and transmsission. 3.) A set of Banks or Borla headers No more noise and a increase in power. Because the V-10 is not a naturally balanced engine vibration at 1800 rpm seems to be a common problem. Also, take a look at that cheap piece of junk Ford calls a "Y" pipe, you will then understand.
More questions ??? Let me know...

my truck do'es the same before and after 2000rpm
70mph @2000rpm 50mph@2000rpm in low this has
been going on since new. 2050rpm it stops
if you put in neturel at 2000rpm it stops, it's not in drive train.
The only thing mine is a diesel . It's at the dealer now!

The tires are new (part of the deal) and seem to be quiet. I insisted on a 4 wheel alignment also as part of the deal.
I had it in the dealer a week ago for the heat shield rattle and they said they fixed it with some clamps. A Ford part number even showed up on the receipt for the clamps. Yesterday, the heat shield vibration came back...
I am scheduled to take it to the dealer tomorrow to have anti-squeak pads installed for the leaf springs. We'll see what they say!
Thanks again!

Worn, out of ballance, Firestone tires will give you fits also. I know of two SD trucks with many new parts installed before the owner replaced the tires and inadvertantly "fixed" the problem. Actually only proves that some service reps are not too smart.
This post is NOT ment to imply that "flutter" is a myth..... just that on these big complicated trucks there are many things that can cause annoying noises and vibrations.......like warped brake rotors and out of balance rear drive shaft halfs....
Good luck tracking it down

Oh damn... forgot ... vibration cures and cauzes
mbear2k: Your gut instinct about it being a big truck and expecting new, different, or constant noises is pretty much what you will have to live with. They are not Cadillacs.
However in your case I would track it down. Things that are speed or RPM dependent are never good, and should be fixed.
Even if it is the worn misballanced tires... a flat on a SuparDuty at 70+ MPH will cause a laundry problem every time!

Luckily, they still let me hang out here... even though I got rid of my SD and have a
GMC 2500HD
now. Was getting worried that maybe Uncle S. sent you off to your demise. Hope you and your better-half are doing OK. And I hope to see you hangin' around here more often.
