Exclamation Help!!!! engine swap now needs help.

Hey guys im new here. i have a 1990 F150 EFI that had a blown motor so i put a 1979 Carbureted 302 in it and re wired it to run and all and she runs like a charm but the only problem is the tranny. it works fine but i have to manually shift it from 1st to 2nd to drive or it shifts into overdrive like right away if i start in drive. i dont know much bout these trannys but i believe they run off the PCM which is no longer functioning since i have a carbureted motor with like maybe 3 wires hooked up to make her run. is there anyway to fix this and still use the original tranny? i believe it is the E4OD transmission. i was thinking about using a C4 or C6 tranny out of an older F150. will this work? will the transfer case still bolt on the C4 or C6? any help would be appreciated. i also have the OD off button on the dash but i do not think it is functioning or if it is it isnt functioning properly. thanks guys!!! hope this forum is as good as the rest of the forums i have joined.

that is likely cause the E4OD tranny is a electronically controlled tranny. best bet is get a C6 thats already 4x4 and swap it all out.

or you can get a standalone tranny controller but those can be pricy and alot of wiring.

ya im not into any more wiring than i already got into. i was thinking the same thing. this motor will not be stock much longer and i wanna keep the 4wd so will a c6 handle it? and will it be a pretty straight forward swap? i wont be getting into clearance issues or linkage problems or driveshaft problems will i?? i would like to know all this ahead of time. i love this truck to death and wanna get her back on the road. its got a really nice wood flatbed and its prolly my favorite truck i have ever owned. gotta love the carbureteds when their running as good as mine!!!!!! haha only 75,000 miles on the motor.

the driveshafts will likely have to be different lengths. i believe the C6 and E4OD are almost the same length though but im not certain. and it'll be a pretty straight forward swap to the best of my knowledge. and yeah the C6 is a strong tranny. it can handle alot of abuse and keep on going.

The E4OD and C6 are different enough so you will have to do driveshaft and cross member work.

IMO, for the $550 + tax etc a controller costs, you would get about half way through the C6 conversion.

Seriously, are you going to buy a $100 scrappy special C6 and not go through it before you install it?

Driveshaft work is probably $200 per shaft, + or -.

And don't forget a torque converter, shifter, cooler hookup, wiring adaptation, and probably an adaptor for the C6 to TC.

Your money....

ok hey thank you for the reply. you guys are really awesome help. i didnt know how much work it would be to switch the tranny which is why i ask. i just want the cheapest way to do it but still have it very reliable and be able to handle the power which wont be super high but i definitely higher than stock with a new intake, carb, headers, dual exhaust, and maybe a cam eventually.

Yeah the E4OD can handle as much power but I think the C6 is a more reliable tranny overall.

Dave if you need overdrive then think about an AOD. They can be built up to handle a lot of power and give you overdrive to save gas. A C6 doesn't have overdrive.

if the OP needs overdrive the AOD is a good choice IF REBUILT. the AOD as most know aint exactly a great tranny.

but if its rebuilt with a few upgrades and a good shift kit it will easily hold up to the higher output of a built engine.

and the other bonus..... the AOD isnt computer controlled either.

An AOD? Again, $550 is a bargain to make the E4OD work compared to what a beefed AOD will run.

a transmission at a pull-a-part here with a torque converter is $54.32 $12.42 for 30 day warranty $8.12 core charge

where in the hell are u getting $550 as a bargain

$130 for an AOD and 4R70W and rebuild kit is $260

so $400 and have one that isnt computer controlled

but if u have no know how or tools then yea a little $550 module might be ok
