front axle not engaging

front axle not engaging
its been a few months since i noticed that it wasn't working but never really paid much attention to it since i don't use it regularly here in south texas. anyway what happens is that when i engage the 4wd (switch operated) the front axle kinda like jumps, or and there is like a light snapping sound when i put some kind of load or pressure on it. what should i check for?
