Ok, for a while now, the 4x4 light does not come on the dash when switching to 4x4. The front hubs(axle) are not engaging either. What could do this? It seems to not be working since I did my head studs at the mechanic. I've checked all the fuses and connections under the truck. I just don't know whats going on!
to be honest i am not 100% sure how the system engages on our trucks, I've never looked. But trouble shooting starts at the source. So I'd check that motor and see if its physically shifting whatever its supposed to shift. Then I'd check voltage at the motor. Then trace the wires back. Unfortunately our trucks have one hell of a wiring harness. You will probably need the factory service manual with the wiring schematic to trace it down. I would check fuses, relays, and any plugs, particularly those near the areas repaired during the head studs. A short would have probably blown a fuse, so my guess is you may have a plug not completely connected. Once you find the plugs that contain the wires that actuate the system I'd advise unplugging them, cleaning the contacts with contact cleaner, smearing some dielectric grease on them, and plugging it back in.
I'd check the obvious points first, and then start at the shift motor and work your way back.
