Just like the topic says, I would like to know what I should be watching for sure when it comes to temperatures while towing. Racing season is here and I am pulling a 48 foot gooseneck enclosed double car hauler and I know temps will become an issue, especially when it gets hot outside. I'm new to all these mods, and new to the big trailer so.........
Anyway, what should max constant temps be and max temps period for the transmission and exhaust?
You dont wanna go over 1200* Egt's for long periods of time (short bursts are gonna happen, just dont do it alot) and anything over 200* in the tranny will start to cook it.
Also what James said. I'll lay it on 1250* pulling a grade and the trans is good for 200* like memtioned. I've added synethic trans oil and have been told your can push 210* for a while and be OK. 48', WOW, I thought my 42' was long. My son-in-law passed me on the freeway and said I looked like a semi. lol
Thanks guys. Glenn, I was thinking I'd hear from you, I knew you pulled a 42 footer and am glad for your input. I understand the semi comparison, the day I bought it home I stopped at a truckstop and parked in a line of semis and it was about the same length!
Thanks again for the advice. I thought I had the numbers right but I wanted input for sure.

I don't agree. You can run as hot as 220°F all day long and not do any damage at all. You can go as high as 250°F for no more than 1/2 hour with no damage.

What kind of tranny oil do you recommend?
To thouse temps are there any problem with the OEM front seal?

Thanks for the correction. Good to know for future reference.

Those temps are for any MERCON or MERCON V fluid. The limiting factor for temperature is not necessarily the ATF, but non-metal parts in the trans and cooling system.
Mark, I stand corrected, I do now remember reading that. I just try not to push it above 210 but sometimes a guy can't help it, lol. George, yes it is a 'train'. With a 42' or 48' trailer at least you can back up. With that combination I got you can't back up more then two feet or your screwed. If I ever get trapped I'll have to unhook the trailer. Its a temp thing, I don't do it all the time! Do you like the Ford sign under the Flag?
