Ok boys, I've been working on this problem for six months. I've searched and read and tested and searched and read and tested till I'm blue in the face. I can't find the cause.
I have a good GPR, I have good GPs, all my wiring checks good, all my tests show good voltage across all the circuits. Everything works ok. I still have P0380 to deal with.
Does anyone have a procedure for me to follow to find the answer.
I'm frustrated
I need to fix this problem so I can sell this beast. It's a great truck, I just own one too many.
Sounds like it could be the UVCWH. You could have one of the GPs shorting out. Even though it may ohm out ok it could be shorting. I would ohm them to ground and see what happens.
-truck has been out of daily service since 2002 at about 180k miles.
-used as a parts runner for a couple of years
-I drive it every once and a while to keep batteries up and tires round for past 4 years
I noticed the light about 18 monts ago. Took to a "reputable" desiel garage. They put in a new GPR and said all is well. Got it home and on came the light next start up. Got the urge to sell the truck about a year ago. I've been working on the problem (when time permits) ever since. I've had a few other small things to fix and clean along the way also, but this is my last hurdle to putting a really clean truck on the market. A TRUCK WHICH WILL NEVER HAVE TO BE SMOGGED IN CA!
It's a 97 ordered in and purchased new in Cal.
Yes Jack, I've cleared the codes maybe..........45 times
I know this must be frustrating. We will try to help. There is a real good sticky thread at the top on glow plug issues. keep after it- You'll get the best of it.
Code P0380 is not documented very well. I think it is indicating the PCM can't see main buss voltage from the GPR.
On the big metal strap you have three small wires that go back to the PCM.
1. One end of the bar monitors left bank current.
2. Center of strap monitors main buss voltage.
3. Other end of strap monitors right bank current.
All three of these wires are protected by (20 ga.) fuse links somewhere in the wire harness from the GPR to the PCM.
WAG, the #2 fuse link is blown. Sorry, I don't know how far up in the wiring harness those links are. I can give you pin numbers on the PCM connector to those wires if you want to try and ohm it out.
I'll try anything. I have not taken anything to a shop other than my own in years and when I did with this problem all I got was bupkiss. I'llkeep chasing if you guys keep the ideas coming. Thanks
Back on it. I've been a little busy. Spring can be that way for a farmer.
Checked the wires, well, I checked the fusable links from the shunt to the wires that go to the PCM. They seem fine. I need a way to check at the test pin. Honestly, I don't know what that means. I know the test pins to check, but I dont know where they are in the system.
I also checked the shunt (I looked at it). How can this go bad? It is nothing more than a thin piece of metal that divides the current to each bank of glow plugs. The voltage is the same on either side.
