Check engine light
I was tinkering around with my 2000 2.5 the other day and forgot to hook back up an electrical connector up by the EGR valve well i drove it to work and it was cutting out badly and idling up high,when i got stopped i saw the problem and reconnected it,the truck runs good again but how do i get the light to go back off,i disconnected the negative battery terminal for a second but it still comes back on.

You have an OBD-II emissions control system. It will remember a malfunction, turn on the light, and if it does not re-occur after XX start-run-shutoff cycles, it will turn the light back off. I don't remember what XX is, but it is not a whole lot.
Try just using the vehicle as normal, and if it doesn't go off after a dozen or so trips, go to a parts house that will let you use their reader to pull the codes and extinguish the light. If it then re-occurs, pay attention to the codes.

Powersmoked, I have yet to see any OBD-II tester available for less than $69, even at Harbor Freight. The only testers I have seen for the pre-OBD-II for FoMoCo cost in the neighborhood of $30.
Please post a picture, manufacturer and part number for this $20 tester from CostCo that you have recommended several times already. I am sure we all would like to see it, and "The Boss" would likely approve a $20 expenditure more readily than the $70-90 that is what I have seen test equipment sell for.

Wish I'd seen that then... I have a brand new reader from HF that was marked down from around $100 that I got with one of their 20% off coupon deals for about $80. A $20, or even $30 reader looks like a good buy to me.

I am probably going to stop mentioning the codereader/scanner idea anymore,lol, every time i do someone mentions something.... I just brought it up because some people cant afford a real scanner but the $20 code reader at least lets you see the codes and erase them. it helps to catch pending codes that go away before they trip the cel..........you probably got a scanner that does a lot more it might even read live data, pids etc,........

and just a reminder all it does is read and erase codes, the other more expensive ones do more........also I don't know if Costco has them anymore. I do know they had them for $19.99 about 5 weeks ago.......maybe they sold out.......next time I am there I will look......
