Diagnose my steering problem please...
As for the steering not returning to center after making a right this has me worried. Perhaps the box is bad? Perhaps it's also bad at the fitting for the hose and that's why I'm not getting a good seal. It's a remanuf Fenco brand. I KNOW I need an alignment but for me to experience new bad symptoms after swapping out the old box with this new one has me concerned. Let's say for arguements sake that the new box isn't returning to center because it isn't aligned.... well shouldn't that have also been the case with the old steering box as well? Doesn't make sense that I'm experiencing a new steering problem after putting in a new steering box and it NOT be the steering box.
Thoughts?
nothing more.
Grab the yoke where the U-joint connects; there should be *no* in-out or
up/down-side/side movement of the assembly, it should be securely in there.
As for turning it, I forget the specs but IIRC there should be very little free
play inside the pumpkin as you turn the yoke and the gears inside engage
and (try to) turn the axles. Maybe somebody knows the exact specs offhand, I
sure don't.
My brother recently blew out the rear axle on his 96 Bronco, there were a
handful of broken-off teeth from the ring gear in the bottom of the casing and
that yoke assembly I mentioned above moved around a LOT. The axle is still
on my garage floor, maybe I can find the time to capture & post some
interior pics of the thing (was hoping to do that today but didn't have time).
Well, after a lot of work I have determined my problem was either the radius arm or axle pivot bushings. I replaced them both at the same time so I'm not sure which one actually solved my problem and neither appeared to be overly warn out when I removed them but it seems to have done the trick as I have been unable to replicate the problem.
I ended up using poly bushings from Energy Suspension. I highly recommend them over the rubber ones you'd get at a regular parts store.
