I was wondering if anyone out there knows how much i have to cut off of the front, and the rear of my 1965 F100 8' box to make it a short bo6 ft) to factory specs, any help would be great, i know the wheel base on a 1965 ford f100 is short box is 115" . thanks
i'm not sure if anyone on this forum has converted a long bed into a short bed, (at least i have never seen a post about it before) I could go measure the differances between the front and back sections of my long bed against my short bed and tell you what they are.
Okay Randall, i got out my tape, took some measurments and came up with this. from the front of the box measuring back to the vertical seam before the tail lights there is a difference of 20 inches, measuring from the front of the bed to the front of the wheel opening there is a difference of 14 inches.(SB=23"+15/16 vs. LB=37"+15/16). measuring from the seam forward to the wheel opening i get a difference of 6 inches, (SB=19" vs. LB=25). for a total of 20 inches. I suguest you find one to measure for your self, But i double checked all my measurments.
measure twice... cut once, as they say
good luck with it.
take lot's of pictures and post them for us to see
i really appreciate your response and measurments Bill, i have never triend something like this before, im so curious to try it, i will definately post pics of the truck and through its process. Here in Canada it is very difficult to find short bed trucks that havent been crushed(scrap steel is worth a fortune here) my father and I have a 67 short bed and a 84 short bed already, i would really like our 65 project to be one as well, correct me if im wrong, is the frame on our 67 short bed the same frame as a 65 short bed would be?
Randall, You are looking at an enormous task. 4 bed rail lip to rail lip cuts and 2 welds to put it back. The welding skill level for something that you will be looking at down that long plain will have to be extreme.
You might be able to weld it but can you make the joint welds disappear?
Hope you can pull it off, but I recommend keep searching for a short bed.
its tough to find a short bed around here, and shipping one up from the US is fairly expensive, my friend that is helping me out has done welding for 4 years and has done some tough autobody stuff, so i think we are going to try it, the truck cost 200 dollars so i have some room in the budget to spend some time playing with it, and if it turns out good, the satisfaction will be worth alot to me, another question is would a power steering box from a 74 ford work on this truck? thanks for all the help guys
