HELP Need new ECM

Hello All,
I think I smoked my ECM last night trying to install a chip. I thought I did everything right. I disconnected the negitive cable off both batterys then cleaned the clear coating off the board. Installed chip reconnected the cables and now it will not start. Disconnected cables again took chip out and reconnected cable still will not start. I'm guessing I screwed something up. So can anybody point me in the right direction for a new/remaned ECM?

There's a place in Florida that usually has good deals on reman units. Someone will come along with the name and the link.

Were your keys in the ignition when you installed or removed the chip? How many negative battery cables did you disconnect?

What exactly happens when you turn the key to the on position? WTS light come on and go off like normal? Can you hear the fuel pump come on for 20 seconds with the key? Any smoke out the tailpipe while cranking? Have you checked all your fuses?

No the keys were on the seat and I took both negative cables off. When I put the keys in and turned it on not all the lights went out like they normally do. And when I say normally do I just bought this last week so I've like put less than 100 miles on it so I'm not all that used to what should be normal.

The little squiggly line that signifies the glow plugs is the first one to pay attention to. It should come on for a couple of seconds, then go off. Tell us what that light is doing since it will give us a clue as to what might be the issue.

And is there any faint smoke coming out the tailpipe when you try to crank?

That light did not go back out. As far as the smoke out the tail pipe I don't know. We are getting a good storm right now so I'm inside. Once it chills out I go see.

If that light doesn't go back out then there's no need in trying to crank. What chip did you try to install in your truck?

Check the 10mm bolt on the back of the PCM connector under the hood and make sure it's snug. Try swapping the PCM relay for the blower motor relay to see if that helps. Then turn the key to the ON (not start) position and pull the PCM relay then plug it back in with the key on. Do this several times and listen to see if you hear things wake up.

I originally didn't take the PCM out if that helps.

How do I know which relay is which. The fuse cover is missing.

This is from Banks on install

78. Be certain battery ground cables
have been disconnected.
79. Locate the engine control unit
(ECU) under the dash toward the lefthand
side of the vehicle. It will be
housed in a black plastic box bolted
to the side of the vehicle. Loosen
the bolt attaching the electrical
connector to the ECU on the engine
compartment side. This will be the
connector closest to the left front
fender. See Figure 9.
80. Loosen the two 7mm hex bolts
on the rear portion of the black
plastic box. Remove the box and ECU
from the vehicle together. Pull the
ECU out of the plastic box.
81. Note the code printed on the
plastic cap on the back of the ECU.
This code should compare to the
code printed on the Banks OttoMind
box label. Pry the plastic cap from
the rear of the ECU using a small
screwdriver, exposing the printed
circuit board edge connector inside.
Retain the plastic cap. The connector
will be coated with grease and a
clear silicone type coating, which
must be completely removed before
installing the Banks OttoMind engine
calibration module.
82. Using a 5.5mm nut driver,
loosen and remove the six bolts that
hold the case of the ECU together.
Open the case of the ECU, being
careful not to lose the plastic spacer
or damage any circuitry inside the
ECU.
83. Clean BOTH sides of the
connector. First, clean the white
grease off with a tissue. Next, scrape
the clear silicone type coating from
the connector fingers with the
abrasive square provided. It is very
important to clean both sides of
the board in order to have a good
connection between the ECU and the
Banks OttoMind module. It is only
necessary to clean the connector
fingers. Be careful not to damage any
circuit traces on the board further
inside the ECU.
84. Orient the module so that its
edges line up with the edges of the
ECU case. If the edges do not line
up, the module is rotated 180° off.
Place the OttoMind module over the
connector, and press firmly to set
the connection. DO NO T FORCE the
OttoMind onto the connector, as
damage may result to either the ECU
or the module. If the module does
not install with firm pressure, check
the orientation and try again.

Well when I looked up under the dash I could see the back of the ECM and the black plastic plug. The black case was already cut to gain access and I just didn't realize what I was looking at. I popped the plug out and took some emery (sp?) cloth to both sides of it.
