Has anyone put a locking device on their fuel cap/door to stop fuel theft/tampering?
I was wondering if anyone has done it or know of good products for this purpose.
idk about ur truck but mine came from the factory with a little ball in the line to keep people from siphoning the gas out and so did the 86 250 my dad had
Yep I am using 2 locking gas caps that I purchased at Pep Boys, it was 2 in a pack, so they use the same key since most of us have dual tanks. I like em, every once in a while you just gotta spray some WD40 in the key hole because of the salt and what not.
When the fuel prices go sky-high again cause of that mess in the Gulf of Mexico now, you will be liking them caps a lot
I have regular caps on my tanks - I'd rather have them siphon the fuel than put holes in my tanks. But it's in their best interest I don't catch them in the act, cause they ain't never gonna be seen or heard from again
yeah when i bought my truck back in 08 and prices were high as hell i was thinking bout that but at 20$ a piece i said screw that. but then again when i had filled both tanks it cost me $140.00 and that was the last time i filled both when it got that high. and my rear tank leaks so i dont do that now until i fix that.
Yeah, back then I was running a 400-mile round trip like every other day, twice a day on several occasions - I was paying for the fuel outta pocket, then getting reimbursed every two weeks, at $5 a gallon for the diesel fuel and 15 mph at best I only could keep up with that for like a month...
And good point about stopping people from putting stuff down your tank, guess in some areas that's more of an issue than siphoning is.
my truck has locking caps, but only if you put the key in and turn it......otherwise they just click when you get them tight but open right back up.......i keep the rear locked all the time, and the front stays unlocked unless im going to be leaving the truck sit for a day or so....both stay unlocked during long road trips for ease of refilling
Stant sells a nice set. Single or duals available. My dual caps cost something like $30+
They work fine but are a PITA since it takes so many turns to unscrew the cap and the key stays in the cap while you are doing it so they keep getting in the way. There are several different models so be sure to check year and model of your truck on the package.
The 90's and up I think have a small flap that catches siphon hoses and cuts them up a bit. Plus there is a bend in the inlet pipe that makes getting a siphon hose into the tank very difficult. I have siphoned gas from my truck a few times and it is a real PITA. Only a patient/skilled or desperate thief would spend the time it takes to siphon gas out of a 250.
Drilling a hole in the tank is also common so even a lock may not help.
I figure when gas gets back near $4, probably this summer, the risk of theft goes up and $150 worth of gas can be tempting.
