Yeah, I'd see what it says first before I just replaced it. There are other things that could cause those symptoms.

Sounds good. Will the crappy scanner at the parts store be good enough you think or should I pay the local garage to scan it?

Here is the thought, but I had a Lumina, and had the same symptoms and it was a solenoid in the trans.

It could be that Lee. The only thing that lead me away from that was he said he had to keep his foot on the gas to keep it running...

That is right Dave, the only way I could keep mine running is to put it in neutral.
I noticed that Jay started a June thread early. I know that I can not count, but at least I can read a calendar.

The way I read it was once in neutral it needed to be idled up.
Otherwise yes, You needed a Torque Converter Solenoid. They are pretty common too.

I didn't try the neutral thing. If in gear it needed a tiny amount of pedal to stay running. How difficult is the tranny solenoid?

They are in the side pan. There are worse things, and better things to do. Not a hard job, just putzy...
