I have been looking for a reasonable priced fuel shutoff for my 49 F-3. I seem to find a lot of $200 racing shutoffs and $5 plastic lawn mower shutoffs. I am currently using a brass petcock I found at a boating store but it does leak a little. I just found this one and was wondering if anyone uses one like it. To be honest I cant remember what the thread is coming out of the stock tank. Does anyone use a shutoff like this?
The thread in the bottom of the tank is 1/4"NPT. I had to install a shut off valve so I could change the under the cab diesel fuel filter. I used a 1/4" NPT ball valve that I bought from my local hardware store. It is rated for petroleum fuels and gases.
Like Mark says, the tank is 1/4" NPTF. That tractor valve is 1/2" NPTM inlet with a 5/16" tube outlet - to be used with a ferrule and a male compression nut. I did the same as Mark, used a quality quarter-turn ball valve and installed it so the handle wouldn't vibrate to the closed position.
I guess I liked the tractor valve because it seems to have a prefilter built in to address tank sediment.
Check all the tractor forums (I'm on quite a few of them) and you'll find that the owners of the tractors that have this setup remove that screen because when the screen plugs up you get low/no flow, consequently you can't drain the tank through it to clean the screen, so you have to siphon it out. Although tractors are more susceptible to contaminated fuel and extremely dirty/dusty operating conditions. Your call.
