4.2 Squealing Sound

Just thought I'd share my results with the board. My '01 F150 4x2 with the 4.2 V6 started what I thought to be squealing from the serpentine belt about a month ago. It started out only under heavy load, then progressed to every startup for 5-30 seconds, then every startup and intermittently while running, and yesterday became constant. Picked up new belt on the way home from work today and started on it when I got home. Checked each pulley/idler after I got the old belt off and found the alternator to be the only thing that squeaked. Pulled it off and it was cracked almost all the way through on the underside. Got me a new alternator, cleaned all the pulleys, installed the new belt and all is well. BTW, I highly recommend disconnecting the battery when unhooking the alternator. I forgot and we had some sparking issues that led to a minor fire while using solvent to clean the pulleys...

Glad it went ok.
That's why every section in the repair manual starts with.
.'disconnect the negative terminal'
