Gear Ratio

I just bought a new F150 Supercrew. The gear ratio is 3:31. Would I have been better of with 3:55? I tow a 3000lb. boat . The engine is a 5.4. Thanks

Do you really pull 10K? I haven't pulled with my 5.4 w/3.55 gears yet, but I hear mixed reviews over about 8K on towing.

You can do it, but yes, you probably would have been better off with 3.55s, especially if you live near hilly terrain.

Both 3:31 & 3:55 rears will pull that 10K lbs but you would not want to do it on a regular basis. 3:73 or 4:10 are the right numbers. I think I read that the 4:10 is available for 2010/11. Not for 2009 or I would have gotten them. Chris

Chris, I agree totally! My situation was I did not order and took what they had and got 10K off so can buy a lot of gears with $$ saved. I do not pull my 5er on a regular basis but do when we need to and it handles it just fine. Climbing Monteagle in TN I can run the fast lane where the semi tractors are all in the left slow lane. The power of the little 5.4 amazes me as does the six speed although we always tow in TH mode. Towing milage is stuck on 13 mpg which is not bad. This truck with the 3:31 gears runs empty 24-27 mpg at 70 MPH. both on the commputer and actual fill. In the mountains it will kick down in 3rd gear and run 4KRPM and keeps temps very normal.

I'm pretty sure the 4.11s are only available from the factory in the Raptor. I do know my dealer offers them as an aftermarket accessory and they say it wo't void the warranty. I don't think I need them over my 3.73s though.

I think I'm gonna call it quits and be home shortly before Independance Day. It'll be good to be home, then we're taking a trip to CA and then to CO to see some family... Get to go through Moab on the way and play in the truck and my motorcycle... I'll take pics and record mileage, etc (I'll more than likely by towing my Mustang too).

If one were to follow the superduty forums, you would instantly notice that Ford is using a taller gear set with the diesel and shorter gears with the gasser. This is more evident on the 2011 models. So in my mind, the 3.31's are suitable to tow lighter loads and still get the great mpg's when commuting as previously stated.

I think the 6 speed's super low 1st gear makes up the difference when starting off. No need for super low gears in the rear end.

I recently got a chance to pull with my '09, 5.4 with 3.55's. I gained a new respect for this truck. It might not be the fasted truck compared to other brands but when the truck is towing, WOW, the 6 speed transmission sure uses the power well.

I just ordered an F150 Super Crew XLT with the 3.55 gears. I wanted 3.73s but couldn't get them in the XLT. Did get the sync, and tow package, and XLT Convience Group. Should be pretty nice. Won't get it for 2 months.

Does anyone have Dual exhaust on these new trucks? If so, does it help in the performance side?

You could have orderd the max tow package on the XLT. That would have given you 3.73s, among other things.
Aftermarket exhaust on these new trucks is a waste of money. The stock manifolds, muffler and pipes are pretty free flowing, and IMO, it sounds real nice. You can't hear the nice exhaust note to well from inside the cab, but stand outside and have someone else rev it... Sounds nice.
