86 with 300 I just got it running and now it wont restart...engine turns over real slow, I have charged the battery, swapped and even jumped it still wont turn over any better. If I dont have an answer in the next hour im calling the junkyard and taking my loss
It kicks out and engages i tried it off the truck but other than that no. My cousin said pull all the grounds and clean them and that may be the problem. I guess I need a couple beers and some time to calm down so i am thinking straight.
yeah im gonna try that this weekend. I ran a jumper cable to the block from the battery and no change. I know advanced auto tests starters, do they load test them too? I was thinking of taking all the spark plugs out and disconnect the coil and see if there was any change in the way it cranks. Any other ideas, its a real nice truck with a bunch of new parts but im not going to dump a ton of cash into it
I know most every place I've brought a starter to runs them down the full gamut of tests. Unless something is seriously wrong, I wouldn't worry about dumping too much cash into it. Starters and starter relays and the like are really cheap for these year trucks. I think my starter was $40 - $50.
The only other thing I can think of is the distributor. If somehow it got adjusted way too far advance, that can really make starting sluggish, or impossible. Just a thought.
hmm the timing...maybe i will try that first its easier to check that the starter, I really dont think the timing is right to begin with. You ever notice how when its your vehicle broken you never think of these things but if it was someone elses you an be right on point, or is that just me? My problem is I can fix a 302 blindfolded and i have no clue about these engines
Hah, for sure. All the ideas of what could be wrong flood in, until it's your engine you're working on. That's why the forums are great.
The 300s are some of the simplest engines to work on. No timing chains, all open space, etc. I think my starter took 5 - 10 minutes to swap out.
might want to load test the battery, even though charged, it still may not have enough cca's to turn it over. been thee, done that, spent a bunch of money to find that out.
Well good news, I took the starter off again and i could tell by the looks it was shot. It had brass everywhere, I replaced and fixed that issue now to find out the running issue and i got a pretty sweet truck. Thanks for all your help guys
Yeah I finally got it started you know the first thing I thought was the starter then thought nah it was doing great just a min before the issue started, but these engines are hard to turn over and Ford never made a decent starter or power steering pump for that matter, so I figured to check all options first. I really hate to throw parts at vehicles especially large parts....they can leave big dents.
The running issue seems to be a vacuum hose hooked up improperly or a vac leak. It runs great when first started and then after warming up, the carb pops constantly and it wont turn over 2,000 rpm plus wont take any load. I just rebuilt the carb and that seems good but im used to holley 4's and im 3 short here. I also dont like the no adjustment for jetting????
My cousin was a ford mechanic when these trucks started coming in for diagnosis and he said there is a place you can drill out on the carb and make it adjustable. He wont do it for me, he said he can explain it to me. I see a big hole in the wrong spot and a truck that dont run if I try.
Yeah, I am having a MUCH easier time tuning the 4bbl than the old 1bbl. Sure don't miss it.
That's awesome you got it started. If you have all the plastic color coded vacuum lines, they're known to have vacuum leaks. It's best to pretty much remove all of them and put in all new lines. Not too expensive, but it gets rid of a lot of leaks.
Wow now thats pretty sweet...I bet it runs beautiful now. Does it starve the 1st and last port anymore or did the intake fix that? Also how much did that run ya? I doubt i would buy one since the truck is my beater but that looks awesome.
