Ok folks, I need some Ford guru help. I am a Jeep guy. My GF's parent's 99 f150 V8 Auto Tranny died last night and I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem or maybe it's common.
The problem was the the truck was stuck on a bit of snow, so she tried going back and forth a bit to get out, but it ended up that the wheels would only turn in reverse, none of the forward gears work. It wasn't THAT cold out either and the drive there was fine with no odd problem. Just all of a sudden.
ANyone else? I don't know much about fords so I can't give you the tranny model. sorry

Did you try pulling it down into manual low? It may have picked up the spinning as a fault, and put the trans into limp-mode. That would result in it not driving in the o/d position. Actually it would be trying to pull out in 3rd, which would work well. You could try disconnecting the battery to clear out the fault codes, but then you'll loose all the pre-sets, etc.

Interesting. APPARENTLY the dealer is charging her 1500$ just to find out what the problem is. I though that was nuts! There must be some stuff they could try first.
Well, theres one big problem. I rarely take anything to a dealer unless its under warranty. After that, i take it to my mechanic, or i do it myself. Dont get me wrong, there are good dealers out there, i just havent had the pleasure of dealing with one. I dont know what the labor rates are there, but the shop i use is $35/hr and they do great work. Dealers are much more than that.
Sounds like you just found a dealer that you or your family will never do business with again. Thats completely insane. A reman tranny from ford is $2000. That dealer sounds like a crook.
Make sure you get a look at the bill before they pay for it, and make them explain just what they did for $1500. Dont pay for it until youre satisfied.
Well the dealer came back and said it's the clutches that are fried. It has less then 30000kms on it and they also said that it was because the engine was reved too high.
