The 300's already a stroked 240, so not much more you can stroke it.
But I think the main weakness is actually the head gasket. From what I hear, there aren't a lot of aftermarket gaskets that won't blow when over 5 - 10psi is added. Plenty of extra strength rods and pistons around (which would be highly recommended.)
The motor's built strong from the factory, but in a different way. It only had 120hp, so they didn't have to enforce certain things here and there.

gettin at?

You've heard of the "Falcon motor" (is it's also ford's "FE" family?). Down Under they've been continuing development AND production (while we went V8, a mistake in my mind) and have an incredable array of motors, cross flow heads, overhead valves, 1 & 2 ovh cams, super charged, truboed, lpg and efi motors.
The guy asked how it would do, I think (being a non mechanic) very well, indeed. Just wish ford america had the same policy as they did down under. Woulda missed some muscle cars but I drove the alfas, fiats & motorcycles @ that X anyway...
Hope that's helpful 4 U both.

i don't really get what the hell you are talking about at all. by falcon motor are you talking about a 427sohc fe motor? trey was just throwing around the idea of putting 3 small turbos on either a 300 I6 motor or a 4.0 v6. i'm not trying to be rude, but something is getting lost in the different ways we speak and the motors we have available.

what the hell you are talking about at all. by falcon motor
(lol. i think that was a pretty good call there dan)

The "falcon motor" is the 'grandfather' (or family) of the one U inquire about (started in the falcon car thru fairmont/granada). It started as a 144 to challenge the VW bug that the Germans were using to decimate the american car mrkt with. It evolved thru 170 (mine) 200, 250 'family' and (as a different side line evolved the) 240/300 "family". We might as well say it's senonomous w/ the phrase "I6".

something is getting lost in the different ways we speak and the motors
I'd agree, and appreciate your patience and thoughtful offering to explain further and in my effort to B helpful I'd say to U the idea you have is being done (I don't have as much info bout the - 300 don't follow it as much, don't seek the 'racing' thing, but rather the "work use" thing) and continues in Australia (1960 - today). USA folks import from Oz, intakes n heads (I have them for sale) to make higher compression motors/add better carberation, and also manufacture here in very small numbers, copies of these components. If you're interested U may look to FTE forms...I believe there's a <nitrous, supercharge, turbocharged> section. If not PM me and I'll search where it is. You can "reinvent the wheel" but U may want to take such information as a helpful point to launch from?

In stock form the 300/4.9l will not take much boost. Primary weak points are head gasket and pistons. Guys running non-boosted 300's with 13:1 ratios are still having issues with head gaskets, even with ARP studs and higher clamping pressures. The 300 bolt pattern just isn't designed for high compression, unlike another I6 I know of.

Even with an extreme build, 30-40psi boost range is really unrealistic. 15-20psi with forged pistons, composite gasket, and ARP's is a stretch.

put all three on the 300. itd be a two into one setup, and i estimate 30 to 40 lbs of boost, through a four barrel TBI injection. my question is: will a bone stock 300 be able to handle that kind of pressure??

some must B sayin: not w/o alot of wrk

U may like the 4.2 better for your purposes.
BTW: I don't remember what your end goal is beside 'more power and more MPGs'... Is it for a on rd only F250? To use as what? Thanx.

Well I have seen a 4WD ranger with a paxton supercharger, not a turbo but boost is boost. It was sometime in the mid 90s it was brand new and was in and out of our dealership with vacuum problems which were obviously not covered under warranty. IMHO the 4.0 is a good motor but not really something I would choose to throw PSI at. For prob the same amount of money you could put a 5.0 in that thing and have a really fun ride, I've seen many rangers and the swap is bolt in easy except for modifying the ac case a little. But to stay on forum topic I'm must recommend u put a straight 6 in your xploder lol. ALSO>>>sorry...but also I have seen 4.6 dohc motors in rangers from mark 8 donor cars, great engines! I bought my 93 mark 8 for 500 bucks like 4 years ago and drive it 100 miles a day to work and back! Buy my 4.6 engine and I'll put my 4.9 six in my Mark 8 and I'll put the 460 out of my 69 continental in my F150 hahhaha
