I've been ready to buy my gears for awhile, but I'm not sure what to do about getting an LS as well. should I look for an OEM LS or is there a preferred brand out there?
I've been looking at a Nitro Power Lock. Are these decent differentials? I know the fords can be built to actually function decently, but what is going to give the best results for a truck that is driven 90% on road?
I would go with the Ford T-Lok anyways... Should be the best on/offroad performer for the dollar. Also, if you use it on snow covered roads, the T-Lok works well because it is not too tight.
I have OEM Ford T-Loks in both the car and the truck. Both are still working well after 145K+ miles each.
I'm not to worried about the price, as long as the guy I'm buying them from can get them. I've got a deal set up where I can barter for the parts I want.
EDIT: Also, this is probably where the gears would be coming from. According to this 4x4 shop. All gears you get now come from the same factory in Korea.
Very good point. I assume the ford 8 is different than the 8.8. Is this correct? Because maybe he was refering to the trac lock and misspoke. But that seems like a very big oversight on the manufacturer's part to call an 8.8 an 8.
A Ford 8 inch rear end is indeed different from an 8.8. It was used in smaller cars in the
1960s and 70s and is a removable carrier type like the 9 inch is. Thousands of Mustangs,
Falcons, Fairlanes, etc used the 8 inch.
I recommend the Ford traction lock. Its inexpensive, operates smoothly and is rebuildable. I have also had the Auburn LS and I must say that I did like it alot too, but I don't think it is rebuildable.
