Well I got my new / used 2002 7.3 F-250 and started checking my mileage after first fill up. My mileage was 13 mpg. I then started putting Stanadyne in fuel. after first fill up I drove @ 40 miles and parked overnight. The next morning when I started truck, truck engine shook, smoked for about 5 seconds then smoothed out. After this seemed that engine ran better. after 4 tanks of Stanadyne, truck up to 17 mpg. Most all driving is rural. Also started not going over 2000 rpm. and no jack rabbit starts.

All those things will get the mileage up. Keeping it under 2000 RPM and avoiding the quick starts do the most for it. Mileage drops off significantly running over 2K.
I would say the easy driving is what got your mileage up more than anything else, when you hammer down, it dumps a ton of fuel into the cylinders. Also, the cruising under 2000 rpms really does make a difference, i get 12mpg towing a 22 foot goose neck if i keep it at 65 mph, 1850 rpm's. Go to 75mph, and i get 9........
