I was going 75mph. today when the front end started shaking, I pulled over on the side of the interstate and to my surprise I only had two lug nuts left on the passenger side. The studs snapped off. Got lucky. What causes this, to tight or not tight enough?
That would be a big curb to hop there, Ron.
Not trying to argue, just really curious.
I've never seen broken studs like that before.
I've seen elongated lug nut seats on the alloy rims due to too loose of a torque setting on the lug nuts, but not broken studs.
I've have heard of it but didn't really see it..a guy in a pickup with a load of hay snapped the wheel to avoid a moose and he hit the curb...about 5 miles down the road he said the truck shook like hell...got out and found all but 1 lug was broke off..but yes..I'm sure he hit that curb close to 50 MPH...i guess if you hit it hard enough it forces the bottom of the tire in witch at the same time forces the top half out,,,,
my girlfriend never see moose before..she is a Philly girl... we rode around all last weekend looking..never see a one.. 2 days ago sitting on the deck 2 moose a mom and her kid walked out from behind the house..lol she about chit her pants.. but ya..a curb over a 1500 LB moose sounds more inviting..
I had that happen to me once but it was because someone tried to steal the rims from the vechicle the only lug nuts left were the locking ones. Luckily I noticed a vibration right away.
I was 200 miles from home so i just got a shop to throw in a new wheel bearing since they were going to bend me over for 1 1/2 hours labour to put new studs on. All of the other lugs were around 160 ft.lbs. No curb hopping here, 33's on 20" rims, believe me I would remember. A buddy of mine hit a big bull moose going 70 mph. in his dually with 2 skids of tar in the box, never touched the brakes. Stiff back for a month but not a scratch. Tenderloins were tasty though.

that's the best part of living up here in the white MT's...deer and moose out number the people...when a moose or deer get's hit near you and your on a list..they will call you and ask if you want it...if you don't..they go to the next person....with moose weighing so much lot of people cant take them..no way to load and cant get enough people together in time to go get it..I have a role back with a 12k lb winch to use at any moment..and yes..them tenderloins are good...
as far as the nut's check them at 50 miles then again at 100...

I've had Moose once. Tasted pretty good. If they call you too often, maybe we should start a mailing list you can ship extra meat out to
Hum, had Bison in OK. before but not moooose, man those suckers are big.. About those lug nuts, I prolly torque the heck out of mine but never any back outs or broken studs here, on a car once.
I don't know if it's related to the studs coming off but I have a front end noise that is similar to worn sway bar bushings, that knock on the floor but I put polys on last fall, new ball joints, new shocks and what i can see of them the leaf spring bushings look good to. I did notice some play with the axle shaft wear it enters the tube, don't know if thats normal.
I have seen where lug nuts were not torqued in sequence and in a couple of hundred miles started to shimmy. When we pulled over all but 3 of the studs were broke. Slightly loose wheel.
