VIN Decode

I'm hoping someone can decode the VIN from my F-600 for me. I was initially told it was a 1978, then told 1971 which I believe is closer. I'm hoping to buy a service manual soon and would like to know exactly what year it is. This truck also has a DSO number, and I'm wondering too if there's a source out there to find out if there was anything in particular this truck had on it from the factory? Thanks in advance everyone!

VIN: F60DVAG2972

???: 158
???: F604
Body: AA8
Trans: A (NP 435 4-speed?)
Axle: 64J

this is a shot in the dark but if you go off of the light duty codes it should read.
F60-F600
D-330 cid V8
V-Kentucky Truck
AG Maybe A62972 Would make it Dec. 1966-A56,000 thru A69,999
the rest of the truck would read out for a 71 but the last 6 digits of the vin.

158 - Wheel Base
A - NP 435 4-speed
AA8 - Cab Chassis is 8 but i do not know what the AA is.

I think this is pretty close but it's a start and good for a bump. Hope you figure everything out. These ol med duty trucks are another breed.

That's correct.

Then told 1971 which I believe is closer.
With a serial number that begins with AG .. you were mis-informed.

VIN: F60DVAG2972

W.B. 158
MODEL: F604
Body: AA8
Trans: A (NP 435 4-speed?)
Axle: 64J
F60 = F600 2WD (gas).

D = 330 2V Heavy Duty FT engine.

V = Kentucky Truck Assembly Plant.

AG2897 = 1978 / 1978 was the first year Ford used a double letter code in the serial number.

158" Wheelbase.

F604 = F600 2WD (gas) / 16,000 lbs. GVWR

AA8: AA = Black all Vinyl / 8 = 81A Standard Cab.

A = New Process 435 4 Speed Manual Transmission.

64J:

64 = Rockwell-Timken Rear Axle / 6.80-1 / 15,000 lb. Rear Axle Capacity.

J = Two choices: Ford Front Axle w/a 5,000 lb. capacity with P/S // or Ford Front Axle with a 4700 lb. capacity w/o P/S.

btw: This truck could not have a serial number of A62987 (1967). The MODEL code of F604 was not used in 1967. 1972, 1978 & 1979 only.

Nice, thanks a lot for the detailed response! It's much appreciated. Now I can get the correct service manual, do a little tinkering and put this thing to work.
