Hello All!!! I need some tips!

Hi my name is joe and I am new to this forum, I need some tips on what to look for when buying an excursion. I am in the market for one I would perfer to have the diesel motor but i cant afford that, so gas is what its gonna have to be. Idealy I want an all black one with grey leather interior!!! But the only thing I know about these vehicles is that they are huge and sweet! So if anyone could give me any advice on things to look for, common problems, gas mileage, insurance rapes (lol), any advice would be great, I used to own a 97 expy and I have always wanted to upgrade! thanks people!

Welcome Joe. Boy, have you got a lot to learn. Excursions are great vehicles.

Do you plan on towing, or will this be your daily drive vehicle? Are you looking for a 4x4 or 4x2? We'll need some information in order to give you some tips.

I would recommend that you try to find a later model. They fixed the spark plug spitting I believe 02 and up. 01's have the mechanical diode in the tranny only if the tranny was made between certain months (I don't remember which mths). Ball joints may need replacing with higher miles.

If you want better fuel economy in a gas, a V8, 5.4 would be best, but towing would be dismal. A V10 would give you better towing experience. Diesel would be best. A 3.73 axle would give you better fuel economy than 4.30.

Insurance is not too bad, but that depends on which state you live in. NJ rapes you.

Try to find one where the owner took good care of it. They are fun to drive, but guzzles gas like crazy. Good luck.

Also if looking at 4X4s check the operation of the hubs, if they don't turn freely it is an easy fix or upgrade to Warn or Milemarker hubs, but use this as a bargaining chip. Also make sure you get an Oasis report! If you plan on towing the 4.30 gearing tows much better and the fuel mileage is really not that much worse from what I have heard. Good luck, you'll never regret getting one, only regret getting one sooner!

I have an MTX 9500 sub enclosure in my X (but I do plan on selling it) I had a friend with one 4 12's in his and it didn't have too much more boom Boom than mine. It's big but still small enough to still carry plenty in the rear. If you need the room on occasion you can always remove it at will.

Forget the sound system and spend the money on a diesel. Please look for any and all oil leaks. Good luck

There are no more problems with the the V-10 than the diesel. Its a matter of preference, the gasmileage and tune-ability is a little better with the diesel but the V-10 will be just fine if you arent towing a 10k plus trailer. I get 10MPG city with mine as I dont do drive it highway much at all. As with other suggestions get an OASIS report, this will tell you the service history on the vehicle (at dealerships) If you see a lot of major items, it might show a problematic vehicle. Depending on the year and engine is what is needed to be looked at. I would steer away from the V8 gas as the mileage savings is very minimal and if you ever tow anything you would regret not having it. The V8 is only really enough power to drive a stock X, if you plan on lifting etc the bigger engine will help.

i had a 97 5.4 expy and if i remember correctly, i would be struggling to get 13mpg in the city with that, my plan was to get another expy but screw it i always wanted a excursion i got two kids now and we go on weekend getaways quite often i had a 300 and yes they are a big roomy car but after i put my girlfriend and two car seats in there there is no room for anything, plus i had subs in the trunk i had to take out to fit luggage, and my parent would always have to take their car too if they wanted to go. So i figure this will be a great purchase for the whole family, plenty of room for whoever wants to go, plus i can have my big stereo and fit the luggage too. i am so excited i lookin everyday to find a good price i dont wanna rush into the purchase and regret it later
