Group my 02 is making a whizzing sound when i tried to start the truck.
Sound like starter is just spinning and not engaging the flexplate.
I had the starter tested and the starter passed by the solenoid failed.
What does the solenoid do that would not make it engage?
A plunger inside of the starter housing is pulled down by the electromagnet in the solenoid. This plunger is attached to a yoke that pivots and pushes the starter drive forward to engage the ring gear of the flex plate. A bad starter drive/bendix, if bad, will spin when it hits the ring gear and not turn it. If the drive is moving outward from the starter front housing, then the solenoid is doing it's job as the contacts mate up inside. I hope this makes sense to you.
