First bit of work on my '77

Okay, I finally managed to get a carb kit and float ordered from Advance, will be coming in tomorrow. So, I took off my carb and found some surprises! First the intake is an Edelbrock Performer 400 (don't ask me how I missed that until now, guess it was so dirty it looked stock ). Once I got the carb off and looked down the throat there was this big-assed bolt barely being held by the venturi! If it had fallen any further, it would have been bye-bye engine! Last thing I noticed was that there was this thing under the carb as a spacer:

Mr. Gasket 1933 - Mr. Gasket Carburetor Adapters - Overview - SummitRacing.com

Except it was installed reverse of it's intent, they used it to put a stock 2brl carb onto a 4brl intake!

Why would anyone do that? The carb would just ruin any improvement the intake made wouldn't it? Should I just go to a 4brl carb since the intake is already there?

Yeah, that's what I'm starting to think too, I'm still gonna finish the 2brl just because I've never done a carb rebuild (found an excellent video on youtube btw, guy does a total tear down step by step), but I think I've got an Edelbrock 1406 in my future, now I wish I'd kept the one that I had on my Monte Carlo!

I do have another question though, in the mean time I'll have to use the 2brl and I was wondering what to do with the vacuum ports? It has 3 (it's a 2150 btw) one in back near the choke, another on the pass. side sort of under the choke, and the third in the front. I was wondering which one's are needed? Which goes to the vacuum advance, and which should I run to the choke pull-off? Basically none of the lines were hooked up when I got it.

Alright, I made my best attempt at rebuilding it and it does start and run (wouldn't run without fuel being poured in manually before) but it's barfing fuel up out of the top! Any ideas?

I don't have anyone to help me and I can't see the carb from the seat so I can't see what it's doing while running (won't idle yet), but the top of it was covered in fuel and it all dripped down onto the manifold and pooled. Thank god it didn't start on fire! I don't know what to do with it at this point, might just go to a new 4 brl carb and be done with it!

got a chance at a (lightly) used Edelbrock 1406 for $75, sound reasonable?

Might have left off clip that connects float to needle so it cant shut off fuel flow.

sounds like its is way out of adjustment. There are 2 screws on the bottom front of the carb, turn them both in all the way in, then back them out 2 1/2 turns, that wont have you spot on but should have you close enough to prevent fuel from pooring everywhere. to finish fine tuning it you will need a vac. guage.

Nope, it's on there.

As for the mixture screws? I turned them all the way in and backed out 2 1/2 turns just like the kit said to.

?? I'll have to poke at it some more, just got frustrated with it tonight.

Kind of ironic, the original problem was no gas getting into the bowl, now there's too much!

Okay, took the carb off again and scoured my work area for forgotten parts, found 2! Forgot to put on the little baffel thingy that goes around the needle seat, and also forgot the little spring that goes on the float (this one is supposed to help the float not jiggle around during off-road conditions, has short L-shaped arm and a 2" long arm).
Installed them, ran it, and it made absolutely no difference! still puking fuel out the driver's side vent and it seems to be weeping out the side of the carb somewhere. ??

Good news is I turned the mix screws out 1/2 turn each and it idles like a baby, a very loud baby.
