trying to help my little brother out on his truck, its a 94 5.0L 5spd 4x4. Just recently his taillights went crazy on him. This is what we know, the brake lights work when the headlights are off but not when they're on. It has no taillights at all. When you turn the blinkers on they stay on steady, but the flashers work fine. You can turn the headlight switch off and pull the blinker lever towards you so that the head lights come on, and the brake lights will work that way, but you don't have taillights still. I'm thinking the blinker switch is bad, any thoughts from the experts. Trying to save him money and not just start swapping parts on him. Thanks for the help in advance.
It's possible the ground at the rear is open. The taillights don't go through the turn signal switch. Check the grounds underneath the bed and at the bulbs.
Tried the blinker switch, no changes. I swapped the round flasher/blinker thing in the fuse box, and now the blinkers come on, but on the rear both blinkers flash at the same time, but they work fine on the front. I checked the wires and grounds at the rear, but I'll dig a little deeper tomorrow. Keep the tips coming.
on my truck i had an issue with a wire that had rubbed in the steering column it shorted out i lost tail lights and the blinkers put some electrical tape and zip tied the wires away from the moving part
Also you may look at the headlight switch being bad, mine did an shorted out and when i pulled it to the runners spot everything would work but when i pulled so the headlights come on they did but the runners and turn signals didn't work.
thanks for the advice guys, i got it figured out today. I spliced onto the ground wire off one of the taillights plugs and grounded it to the bed. Never have found a bare/broken wire but that fixed it. Glad I got it fixed my brother was about ready to burn it to the ground, he has no patience. Thanks again for the tips.
As I said above the ground is on the radiator support for the tail lights. Grounding one of the tail lights ground wire to the bed or frame is not a good idea. It may work for now but he will have more problems later on. The bed is only grounded to the frame with four slip on straps if they are still there. That is why Ford grounded the tail lights up front where there was a good ground. The frame itself is only grounded by about four slip straps and cable center crimp lug.
So all he did by not doing it right is put a temporary band aid on it.
You're right agout that, Bill. If he did check it and it's good, it must be broken on the way up there. I only have wiring diagrams for most of the cars and 2001 trucks. Those diagrams really help. I wish I could get more for the trucks.
