2004 6.0 coolant/temp problem

2004 6.0 coolant/temp problem

Anyone with suggestions. I have a 2004 6.0 and when I get it under a load the fan starts kicking in and out eventually staying on. Usually runs steady after about 20 miles. I also start getting a coolant smell off and on. The temp gauges stay steady and never seen them climb above normal? I want to have it looked at but would like some idea of what it is because there are not many trustworthy mechanics in my area.

could be your fan clutch, egr cooler& oil cooler, head gaskets, radiator hard to say with out seeing it most likely egr cooler

I have been told the egr cooler is likely cause, but if it's that could I still the coolant smell upfront or would it be going out exhaust? Any troubleshooting tips I could preform before going to shop?

look at your degas bottle is there white color around the lid? also have you been filling the coolant all the way to the top or to the low mark ( the low mark on the bottle is actually the full mark)

Check for a coolant leak:

- all hoses and clamps, radiator, including the heater inside!!!!

- if you have a coolant that shows up under UV, use a UV light.

Try to localize the odor.
