2004 6.0 powerstroke with rough starting problem

Hi, I am new to the forums here and just looking for advice on my truck. I have a 2004 6.0 powerstroke (early build, so it has straight oil rails), it has 169,000 miles and I have been having the following problem, when I run the truck and get it to operating temperature then let it sit without letting coolant get close to 100 degrees the truck will start and die instantly. You either have to hold the key over and it will start, but it is firing the hole time, just not enough power to stay running, if it does stay running it chokes its way up to an idle. At first I thought it was a high pressure oil problem, but have since hooked it up to a snap on scanner.

icp desired and icp actual are always within 10psi of each other. ipr percentage at idle when hot is 27% and goes up to about 50% when starting even when having the problem. When the starting and dying occurs icp actual and desired are over 1000psi which the truck only requires 500psi to start. Ficm voltage is always 47.5 or higher. Fuel pressure is about 50psi which should be plenty to start the truck. Also the truck has oem filters and oem caps, switched them myself just to make sure.

one other thing is if you rev the truck over 1000 rpms and try to hold it steady the rpms bounce around mostly down, and you can hear the engine change pitch, but while this is happening the ipr percentage doesn't change and icp desired and actual only move 4 psi in either direction. you can also hear this going down the road through the turbo, instead of a nice clean whistle the truck has more of a choppy exhaust tone.

here is a video of the truck starting and dying

thanks in advance for any advice.

You need to install a blue spring in the fuel regulator. (Link above) While 50 psi is OK to start the truck, as soon as you stomp the throttle, you'll be at 40 -42 psi. Anything less than 45 kills fuel injectors, which may be why the truck is starting/running like it is.

27% ipr at hot idle is a bit high, should be 22- 24 ideally.

What are the ICPV's at KOEO? Have you tried unplugging the ICP sensor to see if the problem goes away?

I have installed the blue spring kit, which probably indicates weak hfcm, however my pressure doesn't drop under WOT which is odd. and I was also under the impression that ipr percentage should be 25%. I have no tried unplugging the icp when the problem occurs. I did change the oil cooler on the truck only to find that most of the screen was broke, I found a lot of screen but not call of it i'm sure because it broke into tiny little piece and I know it has since been to the ipr and injectors.

Hmm, what brand fuel psi gauge are you using? Stuck at 50 psi all the time is not normal.

It is the oem updated fuel pressure regulated spring. I have also checked the tank for obstruction as well as the lines and clean the hfcm.

I meant what brand of gauge are you using to read fuel pressure? I'm trying to figure out if you have low fuel pressure, or an inaccurate gauge reading it. Some people have installed the blue spring, but there was an error during installation resulting in low pressure.

having 50 psi at idle and wot is not right.

I would check the icp voltage at koeo. .18 to .24 is what you want.

Fuel pressure is being read with a snap on gauge. icp voltage koeo if .2 and running is .9 to 1
