"Special" transmission? / writeup?
Got it dropped, cracked, resealed, and back in the truck.
I took a lot of pictures, would anyone like a quick writeup in the event someone else has to drop a ZF? Should I post a new thread?
So Alvin...
What on earth did I say that ticked you off and got you sitting crooked on your high horse?
When I said I was going to drop and inspect the trans, did you think I was just going to tap the housing and say "aawwww shucks, I thinks there might be some kinda junk inside this shiny bell-looking thing, why is there red stuff on that finger thing comming out??" No s*** the seal is on the inside, know how I know? Because you're not the only one to read the manual. You think I just had the luckiest guess in the world that a casting number 1307 translates to a ZF S5-42?
What is "the parts kit" ?
Why do I need "the kit" if I only need to replace the front seal?
I lost and misplaced nothing, the seal was worn out and flipped out on the bottom.
Funny how far off a guy can be when he ***-u-mes someone didn't do his homework.
Also funny how a guy in AZ can ***-u-me the parts guys in ANCHORAGE ALASKA are as inteligent and as competent as the ones he is used to.
Get it now?
Get better glasses so you can actually read the posts way down here.

Insecure (and so defensive) are we? LOL :)
Is that how you talked to the minimum wage parts guys too?
Alvin in AZ and glad I ain't near you! LOL :)
ps- Sorry I didn't pat you on the head and sooth you like most of the
others, didn't know you needed it so much. :/ Sorry. :)
I did everything short of a rebuild, sorry.
I just pulled the case apart to get to the input shaft seal. I stood the trans on a spacer on the rear end and pulled the front case up and off.
I wish I could help you out.
The DIY shop I did the work in pulled the dissasembly instructions off of a site called Mitchels I think (?) Not sure if the shop has an account or if anyone can get on it.
The shop manager typed in 1990-F250-Manual-5sp- and clicked on the ZF S5-42 from the list of available trans in that truck. The paper he printed for me had a step-by-step dissasembly and an exploded view. Without that I would have never figured out how to get the detents out.
I'm a very easy-going guy and only snap BACK.
Your post made it sound like you were the all-knowing king'o trucks and I was a kid that just figured out how to put the key in the ignition and pump gas.
I was a complete gentlemen to the guys at NAPA, even when the counter clerk began to raise his voice and [B]tell me[B] what was in my truck.
If we're done with this little squabble, I'd like to steer this thread back to the transmission, and ask if anyone would like a quick writeup on dropping, resealing, and avoiding the mistakes I made.
If so, where would I post that? New thread, or is there an article section I can post to and put a link in this thread?
I never said I was a gentleman. ;)
It wasn't -all- directed at you, sorry. :/
What bothers me is how there's thread after thread on all these
automotive website forums talking bad about the minimum wage
parts guys like they are stupid, when in fact, the trouble usually
starts with a guy going "hat in hand" asking for a part (for a Ford;)
not knowing the number or size or anything. Not doing anything
-at all- to make the parts selection better or easier. Just gimme!
Are you so perfect in your job, for so little pay?
...is my question for those complaining about parts guys.
ZF's have got a reputation for being hard to get parts for.
Did you have the oil seal in hand?
Size written down?
You knew the seal went in from the inside, which is cool as anything,
no kidding! :) But then, that should have clued you in that this thing
was going to be an odd request. Right, wrong? ;) You maybe the
only guy to ask for that part (by itself) before.
I'm in the same boat as you right now, I'd like to get two new seals
before tearing my ZF apart again. I may not have any better luck than
you! LOL :) ...but I do have the sizes written down so, at least, I won't
leave the store with the wrong seals. :)
Did you use Loctite 518? :)
What all did you replace besides the front seal? :)

I don't want to sound like an arrogant @$$, but I'm a paratrooper in the Army, deployed twice, and my third is already scheduled. I am the definition of a minimum wage worker, and if I am not perfect at my job, people die.
As far as the right/wrong question, I did not know it was going to be an odd request.
I guess I was spolied by the good ol' boys working at the NAPAs back home that knew what I needed and where to get it.
I did not use locktite on anything, should I have?
I made gaskets with black RTV on every surface that needed it.
I only replaced the input shaft seal in the trans, I could not get to the output seal without disturbing the moving peices... and I do not want to get into that stuff just yet.
I threw in an all new clutch set, my dad taught me that you always put a new clutch in whenever you pull a trans.
Me neither! LOL :)
Your plan was to go in there, get the right part and not get argued with.
---------------------------
Spent a few evenings on the internet being sure I had the right stuff ZF
and Ford recommend to use. ZF and Ford make a big deal about not
using -any- silicone sealers on it anywhere! :/
Loctite 518 is the "over the counter" name for the anaerobic sealer they
want used.
Well it's done did.
Me? I don't expect a bit of trouble with the Black RTV. :)
But who knows? {shrug}
BTW, was it Black RTV (adhesive) or Ultra Black RTV (gasket maker)?
Silly-cone RTV and aluminum alloys have any trouble with each other?
-------------------
One of my jobs on the railroad involved wiring the wayside signals that
the engineers use to keep from running the trains into each other. :)
Kinda scary thought, they bad a butthead like me doing that, huh? LOL :)
Or that I was -the- Tucson Division signal wireman for a quite a few years.
God help us all! LOL :)

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I have not even filled up the trans or T-case yet, let alone driven anywhere, Don't know how it will hold on the aluminum. I have only used it before on steel to steel gaskets.
We have a DIY auto shop available to up on base, they charge $2 and hour for a flat bay, or $3 an hour for a lift bay. They provide the tools if you don't have your own, and we bring our own parts and fluids.
BUUUUTT, they are only open Thursday-Sunday, and I didn't have enough time to finish the truck and drive it away Sunday, so I have to assemble the linkage, throw ATF in it, the replace the front drive shaft to T-case U joint that had a few broken needle bearings in it tomorrow after work.
