Is the ZF S5-42 a very unusual transmission to have in a 87-91 truck?
I have a 1990 F250 with the 460, and the ZF 42.
I blew the front seal and plan on dropping it this weekend to inspect, reseal, and throw a clutch kit in while I have it out.
I went to NAPA to get the parts, and the guy kept telling me I had either the T18 or T19 in my truck. I explained that I have 5 forward gears, and there is a big "ZF" label in the housing next to the -1307- cast number.
He tried giving me trasmission parts after looking up my engine.
I looked at the computer, and the notes said "for T18 only"
After arguing with the guy for another 2 minutes, I left.
If I can actually track the parts down tomorrow at the local gear shops and get this done this weekend, would anyone like a post/writeup for this trans?
go in there and tell that dumb *** to give u a front seal for a zf transmission.... give him the truck model that came with a zf like a 93 f250 or something... if he gives u crap like thats not what u told me yesterday or what ever... tell him to shut the f*** up...
u have to excuse those poor retards that these stores seem to hire... most of them spend their free time sucking a baby bottle and playing world of warcraft or some nerdy sht....
..... lol i guess thats just part of life.... ^.^ good luck with your project
I concur. I applaud your reservation in this scenario. It would have been way easier to tell him to shut his mouth and give you the parts you say you want.
On the flip side, I bet they get a lot of customers that have no clue what they are looking for or what equipment they have.

'87-'91 trucks came standard with with the ZF5, I dunno if the T18/19 was even an option for them. The guy at NAPA is an idiot, if anything he should know that by now there ain't that many of these trucks that are still set up like the factory did it, so he should give the customer whatever the customer wants, and not try to argue with them over what THEY are working on without even seeing the vehicle in question in person...
lol i hate people they get working in these stores... im getting to the point of where i am ordering it online and having it delivered to me or going to the store and giving them the receipt and getting my stuff and going...
Some '87s and very early '88s did come with the 4spd T-18 it depended on which assembley plant it was made, and if they still had 4spds to use up from previous model year

I thought that may be the case, kinda like how the C6 was still available long after the E4OD came out. Thanks for clearing it up for me.
It was no problem, i ran into this with an 88 f350, i had, when i blew a bearing out of the trans rear case half. First thing ford shop asked was which trans it had.
OK,
So I finally found my parts stores!
If there is anyone else from anchorage reading this, Young's Gears and CarQuest.
That gear shop was recommended by a friend that has a chevy body sitting on mostly Ford underbody, and they knew exactly what I needed and had it all waiting for me when I went in.
They had the clutch kit and rear seal, and gave me a part number for the front seal at CarQuest.
I can't wait until I get back to the real U.S. and NAPA has real people working the counters.
I drop my trans tomorrow right after I get off work, I'll post when I'm done in case anyone wants to know what @$$ pain is involved with dropping a ZF.

The T18 was a factory option for F150s ( and maybe F250s) up until at least 1992.
Well first, the T18 was used in those years of light trucks. At least
that's what it sez in my '91 Ford Truck Shop Manual and the
Specifications book too. I read them. ;) {shrug}
Second, maybe the reason they don't know nuthin' about the front
seal on a ZF is because it goes into the case -from the inside- and
don't get too many requests for that part by itself since it's included
in the parts kit. ...just a thought. ;) Only guy that'd be buying one
separate is because he lost or messed up the one from the kit. ??
The front seal is a 35 x50 x7mm ...or 8mm will fit.
2wd rear is a 50 x65 x8mm
4wd rear is a 40 x52 x7mm (don't know if an 8mm will fit)
Funny how a guy doesn't do his homework, goes to the parts-guy
then gets an attitude that the guy's lazy and/or stupid. LOL :)
Just because almost every other guy you know does it that -same
friggin way- ...don't mean it's a good idea!
Parts guys always work hard for me. YMMV
Get it now? ;)
Alvin in AZ doesn't think he's "special" unless that's "special ed"!
